Hi everone
I have just bought a 2004 996 turbo with 20k on the clock and the engine sounds a little bit rattly at idle . I looked at many cars before buying this one and they all sounded the same, all the different dealers said ( its normal for this engine) anyone else not like the sound and have any infomation as to what makes this sound.

It's usually the turbo wastegates that rattle, especially when hot, and I don't think there is much that can be done about it. I certainly wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks again richard i thought it sounded like the exhaust but one dealer told me it was the input shaft what ever that is.
I do think it spoils the sound though does yours do it?

I think they must mean the intermediate shaft, which is also a common source of rattles. I get a sound like a slight exhaust rattle at tickover when hot, but it disappears above 1000-1200rpm. I put it down to the wastegates, and just don't worry about it. Maybe I just need a louder exhaust to drown it out! [8|]
