996 Turbo: Manual gearbox Reverse Switch Location

Evening All,

I have been searching a while but to no avail. My reversing lights and sensor have stopped working. As the door mirrors are still working (same fuse), I assume the reversing switch on my (manual G96.50) gearbox has given up. I would like to remove the switch and either clean the contacts or replace it.

Can anyone give me a leg-up and tell me where the switch is, how to identify and remove it please?

Thanks,
B

I seem to recall that it’s located somewhere just forward and above the right rear wheel.

I bought a replacement which was about £10 and looked a bit like a spark plug, but then I realised my error - mine’s a tiptronic and it’s complete different !

I think it is item 4 on thie attached. PET describes it as "sliding wheel for reverse gear". Sounds like a bad translation to me. About £40, incl. VAT.

Darren - not sure what you are referring to. The reversing switch on a Tiptronic is on the bottom of the gear selector lever. What you describe is what I think is the manual switch.

Exactly Richard, I got carried away with Google and bought a manual reverse switch, but as mine is a tiptronic it was as you say, at the bottom of the gear selector lever, so a much more involved job.

Thanks All, Job done.
You have to remove the rear undertray to access the front end of the box. The sensor location is as pictured above. Remove the connector (lifting the plastic clip, near the base). It is a bit of a pain to get to, as it is facing upwards into the transmission tunnel so access is limited and the gearchange cables run directly above it, making getting a tool onto it a challenge. I used a long 19mm socket and a stubby ratchet with a hinged handle, but a box spanner / tube spanner might work too. Get everything ready around you first (including your finger) as the moment the switch is removed, gearbox oil comes out fast. So, undo it lift it out and quickly plug the hole with a spare finger before fitting the new switch.
