For those of you who may be looking for a car, I thought I'd put some info on this thread.
You can see the standard spec, the options and the original costs.

This is based on info I have for the 04 model year.
I do not know definitively what happened before that, but the prices will be very similar, although some standard items were options on earlier cars.
Similarly this is for C16 UK spec cars, cars from other markets may be different.

Assembled engine, looking at the clutch plate.
The tank on the left is the oil tank for the dry sump. On each side are the intercoolers, which are hidden inside ducting in the car.
The silver pipe on the right and the black pipe on the left are the inputs to the two turbos (which you can see) carrying air from the air filter.

Here you can see the cooling of the car.
There is a radiator on each side of the nose. Air from these exits through the wheel arches.
The central radiator exits downwards under the car. On the GT2 (and GT3), there is a slot ahead of the bonnet to allow the air to exit up, so not affecting the under car aerodynamics.
Air from the the intercoolers exits from the side outlets in the rear bumper.
Cool air can be drawn down through the slats in the engine cover to cool the engine bay.
Cutouts in the underfloor panneling allow cooling air to pass around the gearbox.

I forgot to add the colours it came in.
The photo is not great, but then the book does not reproduce the colours that well either. Nothing beats seeing a real car on a sunny day.

White, yellow, red and black are fairly straightforward, although since metallic paint is included, not many are in the solid colours.

Basalt black and Arctic silver are probably the most common, Midnight blue puts in the odd appearance.
Seal Grey seems less common on the turbos that the other 996s.
I don't think Atlas Grey was available from launch.
Lapis Blue and Lagoon Green are quite rare and I don't think I have ever noticed a Carmon Red car.

005AF161BE43455DB5CBEFF8FB44E9FD.jpg

The only remaining thing is the internal colours.
In the book the Metropole blue looks very dark but it is not really.

It is not so easy to read:
Standard colours: Black, Graphite Grey, Savanna, Metropole Blue
Grey and Black are the most common, although I am biased and think Blue is the best.
Savanna is rare in this country.

Special colours: Boxster Red and Cinnamon Brown.
Maybe this is some kind of German humour.

Natural leather: Dark Grey, Natural Brown.
Not sure these were chosen much. My dealer recommended against them, since the standard leather is good enough quality and there was no need to spend extra.

That's it.
If anyone asks for info, I'll point them at this thread to start with.
It should answer 95% of the queries.

Hope it is useful.

Thanks Stuart - that'll be very helpful for all 996 tt drivers, now the pages have been removed from the website.

Could be useful when we come to sell our 996s as we upgrade to the 997t.

Or maybe not.... a close business associate in Hamburg (petrolhead and long term Porscher) emailed me today and said he'd been for drive in development 997t. Evidently some pre-production cars are being offered to long standing Porsche customers to check there's no adverse reaction on release...

His view (and I quote): "it's good, more power, but does not feel that much more than 996 X50, you don't notice new 4WD diff, more toys but overall -- evolution rather than revolution". Just like 996 to 997 other variants, I guess.

Just wondering if his comments re the 4WD set up is why Porsche chose to allow first press test drive on Finnish ice....

Were there any differences to the car from the beginning of the production run to the end. I understand some minor changes were made between 2002 and 2003 models. Would someone like to add what they were?

The only changes affected what bits came as standard. The later car had more bits thrown in for free.
I don't know if the first cars had PCM1 rather than 2 for the sat nav.

And the 2003 model was given the Bose MOST system which IMHO is absolutely dreadful [:'(]
Simon

Really interesting - thanks - relevant to me at this time as I'm about to sell my 993 tt to buy 996tt. If its of interest I have the full 2003 m.y. price list that I can email to anyone who would like it.

Hi All,

Just wondered, the MOST sys is in the MY03 cars, is it upgradeable with after market stuff? Not looking for a sound off spec, just looking at cars now which may not have PCM2 so would like to add a Kenwood or Alpine Double DIN unit. I assume MOST does not allow a simple plug in?
