996 Turbo Sunroof Woes

Hi Folks

Took the car out today and opened the sunroof all the way back. Came home and she closed just fine. Went out again an hour or so later and tilted it rather than full opening. When we got home, I tried to close it and inadvertently hit the "open wide" button by mistake. The roof came down from the tilt and slid all the way back, but when I tried to close it, it kept on getting to within a couple of inches of closed and opened again. Held the button down and it closed but only after making a horrible clanking noise. Now it will tilt but not open fully.

Does this sound like something I've done or is there an inherent fault with the sunroof on these cars? Or... does the roof not like to be closed from the "tilt" position?

A little worried. Gosh - I've only had the car a few weeks and already trouble lurking....

Any advice appreciated.

Regards
Chris

You could try re-teaching the sunroof motor, but the clanking noise sounds a bit worrying. 996 sunroofs often rattle, creak or run slowly, but aren't prone to failure.

BTW, I like the colour combo of your car. The interior looks great..

Hi Richard

Thanks for the prompt response. I'm not sure I understand what "move the motor for the sliding roof to the raised limit position". Does this mean just lift the roof to it's max opening (upwards) position or am I misunderstanding the text?

Apologies for the dumb question. I'm not very good at the tech stuff.

Yes, it means the lift/tilt button, until the roof is tilted fully up.

Hi Richard

Ah - OK - so all I do is ignition on... press lift button until sunroof is at max... then let button go. Then press button and hold for 10 seconds. This should make the roof do a complete cycle. If I've understood this all correctly now, I'll try it in the morning. Like you, though, am a little concerned about the gnashing sounds from the sunroof when I forced the issue and held the forward "close" button down to force closure. Had the car for over a month now so dealer may not be interested.... <groan>

Thanks for the kind words re the colour. To be honest the car was more expensive than a couple of others we looked at but we went for it because of the lower mileage and the interior colour, which we absolutely both loved on first sight.

Hoping to meet up sometime at Cornbury house. Renewed my membership before Christmas but obviously this is something that PCGB is not quick at getting completed. Looking forward to full membership again soon.

Cheers
Chris

Harbour Cars are a very reputable outfit, and I am sure they would be help.

As for your membership status on the forum, it won't get updated automatically. Best bet is to contact one of the Admins - Peter Bull, Paul McNulty or John Sims with your membership number and login name, and they can update you to PCGB member status. Then you'll be able to see all the good stuff on the FAQ and Technical Articles pages! [8D]

Well they were certainly brilliant to deal with. We were very happy with the entire process. Looking forward to hearing from them now have dropped them an Email asking what I should do.

Went out and tried the "teach" thing this morning. Tilt works just fine but the sunroof won't budge backwards at all.

Chris

Sorry to hear of your trouble with the Sunroof, I only once has to assist the closure the once when it was a really hot day- obviously not lately or the cause of your issues!!!
As Richard says, I'd take advantage of the services of the supplying dealer...

As far as membership, post the question(membership & number) in the following thread, the admin tend to watch there... http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=235860&mpage=7&key

Hi Gary / Richard

Have contacted the dealer, who has apologised for the issue and offered to send the car to someone called Vettura (Dan Pightling) who does their detailing etc. He is apparently good with sunroof issues. I'm waiting now to see whether this is a chargeable fix or not.

Have dropped a note in the thread as recommended, Gary. Ta.

All the best
Chris
