996 Turbo to RS4 Avant or RS4 Avant to 996 Turbo

Anyone gone from one to another, interested in hearing the Pros and Cons of each from those who've owned both.

Thinking of one or the other have still got to test drive.

RS4 Avant obviously has the added practicality, but can't help but thinking the 996 Turbo is the performance bargin at the moment.

Greg,

Not quite the same transition but.......S3 to S4 Avant, to RS4 Avant (all as day cars) to 964 3.6 Turbo (wknd toy).

Audi as a day to day mode of transport is a very competent tool, all-be-it largely driven now-a-days by what used to be loyal BMW M3 middle managers, which is a bad thing IMHO. Expect therefore a lot of unwanted attention from those who want to race you everwhere! Very boring after a while.

On the other hand however the 'Porsche Turbo'. It gets respect wherever you go just like the Audi 'used' to. Power delivery is much more exilarating than the normally aspirated 'S's and RS's.

If you have a job that results in you needing a bit of a emotional 'lift' sometimes, then go for the Porsche, on a wet winter morning you wont regret it...fact ! [:D]

Regards

Completely different cars, it is like comparing melons to water-melons....[;)]
I used to have the S4 Avant, then I acquired the 996T and then I had to decide what to do with the S4. Either go for an RS4 or a 964...
I test drove both and I went for the 964.
I would go 100% for the 996T, unless you desperately need the space...

I used to have a Audi S4 bi turbo and a V8 S4 and they were the most compitent problem free cars ive ever owned.
Thats the thing with performance Audi's they just go fast and work. When I was looking for a 993 turbo about 5 years ago my current car was the bi turbo S4, it seemed like a natural progression. I test drove some 993 tt's but couldent get the right finance figures that fitted into my budget. In the end I went and got a V8 S4 which I loved. But after 9 months with the V8 I was still thinking about the 993 tt. In the end I choped the V8 S4 in for my current 993 tt which was the car I should have brought in the first place. My mrs loved the Audi and still hates me for getting rid of it, but the 993 was my dream car, and still is.

Maintenance will always be the test with the porsche, but if you can stomach it, then go with your heart.

Audi S4 bi turbo and a V8 S4

Neil

The Saloon S4 bi turbo has to be the greatest (budget) all-round rocket ship constructed in recent years by Audi. A friend and I used to go out for Sunday 'drives' when we were both single.....my S4 Avant was no match for the his earlier bi turbo and to be honest rated very highly against my later RS4; mostly because it was 30k less to buy, attracted much less attention when 'pushing on' and de-badged, looked just like any normal A4.

If ever I am approached by someone pushing-on in an A4 I always look closely to see if it the bi turbo and then get well out the way....today's driver is much younger, (due to the sub 10K asking price for this car) and may be an accident waiting to happen?

God help us when the RS4 gets to BE sub 10K !! [:'(]

The mrs tells me if im not gona use my car in the winter months then I at least have to get something usefull while the 993's tucked away. With bi turbo S4's now kicking around for less than £5k, it might be an option.[8|]

I have had an S4 Avant, RS4 2.7 version, RS6 then a 997, 996tt and now a 997tt.

Different cars for different jobs. If you can only have one car buy the latest RS4 for the family. If you can afford a family car and a toy then buy a 996tt. I still have mine and its awesome!
