996 turbo - wastegate seized

Hi need some help
I have a 996 2002 62000m
I have a metallic sound coming from the waste gate I have put a stethoscope on it and you can hear it the one I have used is a 6 clamp with a swishabul control
I have put the sensors around the turbo and exhaust ex/manifold and driven the car if you switch from one to another it comes back to the waste gate only
You can hear the turbo winding up normally so it is ok no smoke
I have checked the shields and they're ok
Any help

When Peter Morgan inspected my C2, I spoke to him about things to look for when buying a Turbo, and the first thing he said was to look out for noisy wastegates. He said they can rattle loudly on tickover. I've never heard it myself, and I trawled Renntech, but can't seem to find anything, so it can't be that common. They are about £250 each, btw. Not much help really.....
 
Thanks, you have put my mind at rest. I have been looking through all sorts of data and as you, I have never heard of a waste gate rattling until now. Many thanks 996 Babes
 
Hello Does it sound like the wastegate or where the waste gate goes into the turbocharger ? If its the connection piece onto the turbo then you have a problem as this is part of the turbocharger and is worn there is a bush and pin assembly and can wear but is very rare, 996 TT normally suffer from seized waste gates as they have not been driven hard enough for them to actuate on a regular basis. hope this helps mike
 
Hi Mick Thanks for your help yes the west gate is seized solid and it has started to smoke on start up on this bank I have decides to take both Turbo of and send them to KKK as I have spoken to them and they seem very help full As everything is very rusty I have decided to take the lot off Managed to get the manifold bolts free but having problems with the silencer box any help would be grate Is it held in place by the stainless steel shield or the ally plate? I have loosen the bolts on the ally plate but there to long to come completely out Tried the Alan keys but like everything under their rusty?????? Michael

Hello The 6mm allen keys hold the rear exhaust silencer onto the hanging bracket, cut them off if you need to. Probably best removing the rear bumper too, only about half hour to remove. Try and replace the check valves on the turbo charger oil supply into the body of the turbo if you can as this can cause smoke on start up. The o-ring gaskets should be replaced at the same time as they are compression ring gaskets. The oil catch tanks underneath the turbo chargers suffer a little from the oil pipe work seizing into the aly tanks..... to remove them take out the 8mm drain plug then a long 6mm allen key is required to get to the bolt inside the tank. Thanks again I think you have done this before I have a funny feeling everything on this car is going to be replaced as all the oil pipes/ bolts gaskets/( heat shields’ have disintegrated ) look as though there going to sheer /snap round off extra I must admit I don’t think I would have got one if I had realised the quality had gone down so much It is going to be one big shopping trip to the main dealer[8|]
 
They do get very rusty under there. Heat shields crumble away and so do all the nuts. I uses a great rounded nut removal socket and all came of fine when I changed my exhaust.
