996 Turbos

Caroline's 996 Turbo has just had the Akrapovic evolution system fitted and the condition of the turbos came up - at the last service Parr said they were corroded but they had seen far worse. As everything is now nice and easy to get at and undo is it worth replacing the turbos? Or leave them a year or two till they get really bad? Internally they are fine and the studs/wastegates/rods/oil pipes are fine.

I don't like the sound of 'the turbos are corroded' - yet the Porsche guys I talk to take it all in their stride.

I'm used to a Lexus LS that is hewn from granite, the exhaust still looks like new after 200k miles, the underside of the car has no corrosion yet the 996 looks quite, ropey, and that seems the norm. A bit like old British cars - as long as you look after them they are fine. No comparison in the driving - the Turbo is great fun, the LS a lovely waft.

So - replace the turbos now when everything is nice and loose - or wait till they get worse?

What does the Akrapovic system sound like? It has been something I've been considering for a long time but you are the only person I know fitted with one. Is is loud? Boomy at speed? The Oettle ones with the PSE-type modification I had on the Carrera was great in that it was no louder nor was it boomy at motorway speeds but had a lovely shriek when the taps were opened. Please, please advise! Then maybe I can get the stage 2 mapping done by Nine Excellence.

Hi Minny - still early days and I'm bound to be very biased (the more I spend the more biased I am) - but I can say no boom or drone at any speed, sounds like a normal zorst when pottering along. That's one thing I'm really glad about - I'd have hated to have fitted a zorst that drives you mad on a long run. This is Caroline's car and she's loving the sound the more she drives it - what also sounds daft is the extra ponies it's liberated - where she says she used to be doing n leptons she's now doing n+10 - a heavier right foot I reckon as it sounds so good.
I'll take a video of the noise test. BTW - there are a few Stainless Steel zorsts that will sound just as good - speak to 9E - they may well have their own (or a 911Tuning) system pretty soon. But how many Ti systems are our there?

The Akrapovic is the one I want. Just didn't want to be disappointed after paying so much for one. Good to have your feedback. Thanks

How about one of these: http://www.ipe-f1.com/p960tt.html

Nice to be switchable. I have no idea of the price or quality, so not a recommendation - just a FYI.

Seen the Akrapovic on my cousin's Nissan 370Z and it looks so well made. Really is a work of art - hence the price.

That looks like a really nice system Richard...and switchable. Does anyone know what it costs, is it Akrapovic price ?
