996 tyres...

I have new P zeros on my car, which I hope will last a while yet given the sort of driving I do.

However, when it comes to changing, two q's...

1. Has anyone experienced handling issues when replacing the rears but not the fronts?
2. What other makes of tyre to people rate for the 996?

Thanks,

R.

Hi. I've always used Micheline Pilot Sports (N1). They've got just the right combination of great grip and a good compound which lasts. My rears have done 8k miles so far. I've just had them swopped from left to right - as there was a bit too much negative camber and the inner shoulders had worn a bit. I now expect to get at least another 3 to 4 K miles out of them - as there is still about 4 to 5 milimetres left in thje centre of the tyres!

When I purchased my car (second hand) it had Pirelli P Zeros on the rear (half worn) and Dunlops on the front (fairly new), and to be honest it never felt settled. I have heard that mixing brands is never a good idea, but the different wear levels couldn't have helped either.

Since changing to Michelin Pilot Sport N1's all round (225/40 R18 front, 295/30 R18 rear), the difference is quite discernable - more confidence at speed, and more rear grip (probably amplified by the extra width of the 295's). The N1's are also quieter on the motorway than the old combo.

Cheers,
Nathan

Hi Adrian,

Are the Michelin Pilot Sports not directional ? IE: You can't swap from left to right ?

Or did you have the tyres off the whhels to do this ?

Cheers

Paul

I have had Pirelli P-Zeros and Pilot Sports on our 996 and although I have heard that the Pirellis give marginally better performance I think this will only be felt if you are doing track days with the car.

Now have Michelins all round and very happy. 6,000 miles out of a set of rear Pirellis was unacceptable IMO! Hoping to see something approaching double out of the Pilot Sports !

Just replaced Conti Sports with Michelin Pilot Sports. About 30% quieter and the ride is more supple. No handling or grip problems in the first 500 miles. Highly recommended.
