996 Whine

Hewett

New member
My local independent (Autofarm)recently noted a slight whine from the rear of my '99 C2 (66,000 miles) during a service. They thought this might be the diff. They checked the transmission fluid and didn't notice anything unusual and didn't advise any further action.

The noise is constant and increases with revs, I can hear it but it is not intrusive. I am just wondering whether this is something to be worried about and whether changing the oil may help.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

I had a similar warning concerning a gearbox noise during a service of my C4. Changed transmission and gearbox oil and noise hasn't appeared since.

I gather that 65/70k is a good time to change the oils even though Porsche say up to 90k (or every 10 years). Unless on your service history, it may well have never been changed before.

Thanks,

Steve

Diff noise would relate to road speed and be engine revs independent - does it change when you change into another gear - if so doubt it's diff.
