996T Clutch Replacement: OEM or Upgrade?

Hi all,

I am thinking about clutch replacement. The original Porsche item is around £900 but for that price I can get an uprated aftermarket such as the Sachs. Any thoughts or recommendations please?

I think sachs actually made the original clutch.
They do.

If you aren't going to put more power through it, not a lot to gain by fitting uprated clutch. If you are thinking of remapping, then it would be wise to upgrade to something like the GT2 pressure plate and friction plate.

Whilst I really like the thought of a lightened flywheel in addition to an uprated clutch but I have to keep costs down. Apart from having to get the expenditure past the other half, we have taken some serious hits in the last month with one car needing a new engine, the vintage Land Rover having an extensive pre-winter overhaul, a Tubi for the Porsche and three insurances / MOTs all converging in a perfect storm.

Porsche are quoting around £900 for a genuine clutch for our X50 which set me thinking about an upgrade...... Sachs 740NM perhaps?? I would want to keep the feel and operation as close to stock as standard. Any thoughts please?
 
It would be my strong advice to go with the upgrade. I replaced my clutch with a standard item 3000 miles ago, did one track day and damaged it. Now even though I dont intend to track the car again I'm having the 280mm upgraded item fitted, which has been fitted to cars running 600hp that are tracked all the time without issue. The Sachs upgrade has benefits beyond simple clamping force. It's a tougher unit all round and given the similar parts cost. I think it would be sensible for anyone if you're going to the trouble/cost of replacement.

I have been recommended to fit the genuine GT2 clutch. This sounds a good plan to me, as it is a higher spec that the X50 turbo without any significant change in feel or operation. Does anyone know the torque differences between the X50 and GT2 clutches?

The car was standard at the time. After my track day I noticed the car didn't want to go in and out of 1st/reverse or 6th properly.

Apparently I broke a 'finger' and so it wasn't clearing properly. It didn't have a problem with slipping even after I had it mapped but it's being replaced at the garage at the moment as a preventative measure (and because I've somehow been persuaded to upgrade to 600hp even though I was happy with 500hp)

To be fair 550-600hp is a good level, it's INSANE and yet people have still done 50k miles with regular track work on 600hp 996 turbos and had no problems with reliability. I always tune cars too far and then regret it! I will not be making that mistake again probably
 
JUST HAD A CLUTCH FITTED IN MINE 505BHP I WENT FOR THE SACHS ORGANIC 240mm UPGRADE,BOUGHT A NEW STANDARD SACHS RELEASE BEARING £614.00 + VAT
£300 TO HAVE IT FITTED DONE IN THE DAY
IT FEELS JUST SAME AS FACTORY ONE

Got the car back on Friday. The GT2 clutch feels the same as the Turbo. The biting point is closer to the floor so I stalled it the first time but it is nice and light despite being a heavier duty unit.
