996TT Cam Chain Noise

Hi all,

Am hoping a fellow 996TT owner has had a similar experience to me and help shed light or possible solutions or actions. My car recently went for some fairly routine work and the high performance specialist I took the car to, he picked up on a noise from the lower central area of the engine. It was taken to a highly experienced Porsche specialist who had a snoop around the engine and did some checks like topping up the power steering fluid that didn't reduce the noise. This specialist mechanic narrowed the noise down to the timing chain thinking the sound is above what it should be and could lead to some serious problem.

The sound is essentially a clanging sound from the chain which quietens as the revs go up.

3 mechanics have confirmed they source the sound from the timing chain, but obviously haven't dropped the engine to have a 100% check.

I have been told by a 4th specialist the engine always makes this clanging noise when idling and a standard sound from a 996TT engine.

I don't have a hugely tuned ear for engine sounds, does anyone else have experienced of this problem?

Appreciate any time and assistance on this, thanks in advance!

Not sure where you are based and what specialists have already looked at the car, but Ray Northway at Northway Porsche in Reading, and Mike at Zentrum in Notts, along with Ninemeister in Warrington might also be worth a call to discuss.

the 996 turbo imho is very "rough" sounding engine at idle with regards to a timing chain rattle/clang type noise. I'm particulary fussy about noises etc and was worried about some of the cars i looked at but generally they all seemed noiser than expected. Only way to tell would be to test 2 cars side by side?

Must admit i had some concern about a simalar noise from my 2001 TT on tick over when i first got the car.
I took the car around the corner from me to GT1 Chertsey who have done work on all my Porsches through the years and asked them their general opinion of the car not saying anything about the noise.........they said it's fine.

Thanks for the responses. I have managed to compare to similar aged cars and seems it is a fairly common sound. It hasn't reached a level to have too much concern, but will continue to monitor it to avoid having to replace half the engine!

I thinks it's pretty "normal", my OPC said that it needs to go away by 3000 rpm (ish) if not they'd fix it under warranty.

Yip, same also, picked up that it was slightly louder on left hand bank, when speaking with my spanner he mentioned these Turbos are noisy when idling. Find out soon when she gets another thrashing around SPA, lol

all turbo's i heard come through opc made noise which was nothing to be concerned about normal
