996TT sports exhaust update.

Hi chaps,
Thought this would be of interest to fellow 996TTers.
Having pruntled on about sports exhaust's a while ago, I thought an update was in order. Got the car back from my local OPC yesterday with a Cargraphic sports system fitted...............first impressions...

Upside.....From the outside it sounds fanbloodytastic, particularly flat out in 2nd & third & not too loud on tickover, just deeper & meaner !! Has added to the driver interaction, sounds particularly mean in the mid-range. The turbo's are spooling up earlier & there is noticably more grunt than before.

Downside....It can be VERY boomy in the cabin on certain part throttle openings (the same points as the standard car is loud..e.g.around 2k). This may prove wearing, only time will tell. It's at it's loudest inside the cabin in the mid-range & (suprisingly) not at the top end.

I will keep you posted once I have lived with it for a while, which reminds me must go out & test it out again, listen out for me !!!

Hi Vic,
the Cargraphic system comes with race cats as part of the package, what system have you got fitted ??

Sorry getting toooo clever for my own good ....................have a 993 GT2 with a little work by Rheinhold Schmerle, came with Car Graphic exhaust, which i was told by former owner was 3 rd one he' d tried, felt the others were i quote too ostentatious! Taking an opportunity to progress to an Evo engine fitted race cats and the sound ,especially at street speeds is magical ............................Still gets through 105 dec at Goodwood ,though one does have to short shift ahead of the miccrophones!

Hi again Grant (I'm straight from PH's)

I see an OPC fitted.. presumably it doesn't therefore affect the manufacturers warranty?

See you at Bruntingthorpe next year I hope ;-)

Steve

VIC....993 GT2 with evo upgrade, sounds one "mean mother", how much bhp are you packing ??
Apparently you can't fit a sports exhaust to the 996TT without the 100 cell cats, otherwise the engine management system throws a wobbly due to back pressure variances ! The Cargraphic comes in three levels of loudness, quiet & mid are TUV approved & the loud export version isn't.

STEVE Good point, they did say that the warranty wouldn't be affected unless a fault/damage was directly attributed to the exhaust system itself, fingers crossed. But this is one reason why I wanted to ensure it was fitted by an OPC....love that picure of your steed, captures the TT's mean moody style in one !

Just been run in on dyno..............575bhp; 750 nm....................straight smooth graph to the stars ...................Donnington PCGB 30TH if ur around?

Grant .. I had this boomy problem on a Hayward & Scott System fitted to my previous 2 Boxsters.... Boom would kick in at 2200rpm and fade out completely by 3200rpm.. The most boomy area being bang smack at 2800rpm.

After 3200 sound inside cabin was almost back to standard! Outside it sounded wild still.

Having suffered the boom for 4 years and 2 cars on my current example I decided to swallow a mighty big pill £££'s wise and fitted a Roock Sports Exhaust ... Problem solved as promised by the Roock Distributors for the UK.

Deal was simple if I wasn't happy they would remove and refund my money.

Car now sounds fantastic and 100% boom free at any rev range...Car now screams like a Ferrari 355 but unfortunately not so loudly. My stereo is almost redundant as there is only one tune I want to hear nowadays [8D]

Cheers for the info daro911, the boom is between 2 & 2300 so not so bad, I am driving around it on part throttle if I am "pootling", but it sounds good if I want to press on.

I don't think Roock do a system for the 996TT, but it is good to know that you are happy with yours, you can't beat personal recommendation.

Unfortunately you need 100 cell race cats for the exhaust to work with the Turbo, this makes the systems expensive at around £3500 (nearly £5000 for a RUF system !!!) but you get bigger gain's than on a NA car.
In honesty I wasn't 100% sure I would be happy with a new system, as the Turbo is never going to sound as good "inside" (outside is a different matter !!) as a naturally aspirated Porker because of all that extra plumming. My OPC recommended Cargraphic for build quality, so I hunted around & found one second hand at a good price.

After a weekend blast or two, the new systems biggest benefit is having the turbo's slam in that bit quicker & harder with a gruffer sound track, the better half described the car as even more "Savage" (dictionary definition..........wild fierce & cruel) that about sums it up !!! As I have had the car for around 10 months now the new addition is refreshing & stimulating that male car bonding thing !!!

Hi folks,
I promised to give you an update after I'd lived with the new sports exhaust for a while, so here goes.......................
The system is a cargraphic sports exhaust with race cats, mid-level volume (they also do a quiet & loud version)................

Outside It has a more aggressive grumble at tickover & sounds simply fantastic at high revs with the pedal to the metal. Also you can drive it around on part throttle without drawing attention to yourself, in otherwords it's not over loud , unless you floor it.. good news.

Inside With all the plumming on the Turbo, you don't get the full benefit inside, I had a system fitted to a C2 & this was MUCH louder inside, on the turbo it isn't. You do get more noise & better interaction with the car (particularly with the sunroof roof raised) but I would have liked & expected more volume at higher revs ( you would get this from a loud version, but this would be too loud outside, so be carefull when choosing a system), most of the increase of volume inside is in the mid-range . Also the system is still rather boomy at 2k, if you floor the car in a higher gear at 2k it will hurt your ears
( not nice). But having had it for a month I have simply learned not to do that.....so good but not that good

Performance The system is supposed to liberate an extra 21 horses & you can feel an increase in grunt, more than this is the fact that the turbo's spin up more quickly, which is good because when you have lived with the Turbo for a while you do notice even the slight lag that the standard car has, compared to a naturally aspirated car. But there isn't a BIG difference in performance.

Summary The system has increased my enjoyment of the car & I will be keeping it on long term, the extra grunt/quicker spool up & more aggressive sound outweighs the 2k boom, which you can drive around. BUT
would I pay & is it worth £3500 (the price of a new system) for the benefit's ..in honesty probably NOT (being tight !) but I purchased it second hand for £1000 & feel at £1-2k the benefits are worth paying for !
