997.2 GT3 review

It is a very very nice car but as per interview with the project manager last year it is targeted at the top 10% of skilled drivers to get the best out of it - the implication being its a bit edgy and will try and kill you if you take too many liberties. Whereas the Turbo with electronics and 4 wheel drive does help make the driver a hero with gentle background support.
Also it is a track homoglation car, so it is designed more for track than road use, after experiencing my brothers 996 GT3, my beast before mods was quicker over normal roads as it manged the bumps better - on a Track it would have left my 997 for dead.
So while I agree with you fully on pedigree and build one needs to remember its a track car first and road car second - so it won't be as comfy or as planted as a turbo on normal roads.
Mind you I wouldn't say no - I'd just need to do a world more driver training to get the best out of it.

I don't think that's correct - even though Andreas Preuninger might like to suggest it is a race car for the road.
At the absolute limits, a 997TT will have more mechanical grip and electronic intervention, but the 997GT3 (Gen1 and Gen2) has plenty of adjustability to suit the relative skill of most drivers.
I recently drove the TT and GT3, back to back, on the road and, whilst I was very impressed with the TT, the GT3 feels far more special, more tactile, more rewarding, nicer (different) power delivery and glorious engine noise. Ride is a touch firmer and a bit noisier than the TT, and the splitter is low, but it is still remarkably comfy and makes a fabulous road car (if you don't need the rear seats).
Like the original 2.7RS, it feels great even pootling around at legally friendly road speeds. Chris Harris's introduction sums it up nicely.

Oliver, thanks for the correction - You said what I was trying to get at far more succinctly that I did, so I editited it out above. Hope I did not misrepresent anything[]
In no way was I suggesting the GT3 is not a fabulous car, it is. You rightly indicated how special it is to drive and for such a fast car how relatively comfortable it is. But at its limits, as they are so high, do require more skill from the driver to retain control than a Turbo
All I was trying to do was highlight the small but present differences in the two cars and then admit I'd still have a GT3 in my garage if I could but then I'd also have a Turbo as well, if I could and then that Gayardo.....[]
Seriously if you have either a GT3 or Turbo you are a very lucky person

To be honest, the whole range of Porsche sports cars is pretty amazing. I drove a Boxster 'S' yesterday and the £for£ enjoyment is pretty much unbeatable.

I am not swapping soon but I am moving to a position of not knowing what to get when I do. A gen 2 turbo will come out shortly before the 998 version, so I would rather wait for that but how long I wonder until one of those surfaces? But when? 2010, 2011 or even later?

Just like some other posts I look at the GT3 gen 2 and think, yes probably this is more attractive as a fun car than my turbo, which is awesome but sometimes leaves you feeling a bit numb in terms of what you have been doing for 20 minutes or so of fast driving. It seems to lack some feel and NOISE, I need more NOISE!. When I bought my late 07 car I tried a great 56 plate white gt3 and it was more exciting but I wasnt brave enough to have it as my daily commute with roll cage, carbon seats and harnesses. Whilst you should never look at resale values when you buy these car, from that perspective it would have been a much better deal as I bought my turbo at peak of the market.

No future stock Turbo will give you more noise. It's seemingly against Porsche's ethos and target market to make the Turbo into anything other than an Autobahn cruiser.
997.2 Turbo will be out end of this year (PDK version in Jan 2010) and the 991 Turbo will be out around 2012-2013.
So if you want more theatre when you go for a drive then you either need to go aftermarket add-ons or GT3.
