997.2 Turbo exhaust tip removal

Hi,
Has anyone on this forum removed their 997.2 Turbo exhaust tips? I want to machine polish mine - they're in a shocking state, heavily pitted, blackened and beyond the realms of Autosol. I'd like to know if the bumper needs to be removed or can this be done with everything still in place?
Thanks for any tips (no pun intended).
Simon

Hi Simon

you can remove them without removing the bumper. They are clamped onto the silencer and the bolt to tighten is underneath.

Joe.

And will probably shear off when you try to loosen them! I replaced mine with black chrome double pipes. Much nicer than the original ones.

Hi Joe,
I've just invested in a Dremel rotary tool so I'll give them a go in situ. It's a great piece of kit. That's my Sunday sorted out!

With the view to removing them at some point soon, I had a quick fondle from underneath this evening and the nuts and bolts holding the tips on feel extremely corroded. I fear the bolts may well shear straight off. I'll leave that to MW Performance when they fit the Sharkwerks. I'll get them to clean the bolts up and fit new nuts so I can take them off and machine polish them all over properly.

See you Saturday. Alas, I shall arrive with tips half finished!

please could you let me know where you sourced the black chrome tips, mine are on the way out too...

many thanks

If you soak offending bolts with plenty of penetrating oil and use a 6 sided socket (13mm from memory) you should be able to work bolts tight and then loosen progressively undoing them. tightening and loosening will clear rust from threads. Bigger problem I had was getting enough purchase on the tips to twist them free. In the end I removed bumper cover to gain access and used a mallet and piece of oak on the back of the trims to get them to move. They are well made so with patience you'll get them off intact.

Thanks for the advice.

I will start working on getting them ready to remove and then look to have re finished. I had not thought of refinishing, a very good option.

Thanks again.
