997 After Market Turbo Kit

Hello guys and girls,

I have purchased a 2006 997 4S Carrera and would like to fit a turbo charger kit. The options that I can find online are from TPC Racing and from VR Engineering. Obviously two very different approaches but giving the same HP increases. I like the TPC Racing option the best as it is the real turbo deal in my way of thinking. But there are some issues in that this option does not come with CAT converters in the exhaust system and I was wondering is
if this is a big issue in the UK to get through the MOT? I have not lived in the UK for more than 17 years so a lot of things have changed, no doubt!!

Or does anyone have a better option for turbo charging?

Thanx & Regards
Chris

If you want a turbo charger added then I'd suggest selling the car and buying a 997 turbo. It will probably cost you less in the long run than what you are suggesting.

I don't think the internals of the 997.1 Carrera engine are strong enough to handle the extra power from a turbo charger. The engine in the Turbo (Metzger) is completely different and is much much stronger.

So is the Mezger engine...[;)] I agree with Alex. The better option is to buy a 997 turbo....I would always be worrying about something going "bang" otherwise.

Yep, good advice.
The turbo has a stronger engine and a chasisis with the capability of handling that extra grunt.
The money you'll have to spend in modifying your engine, suspension, brakes etc. will,
go a long way towards buying a car that's already fully sorted. [;)]

Clive

Can't see any turbo kits from VF, only a supercharger kit, which would work happily with any exhaust you choose.

The TPC kit should be able to be modified to include a cat from any reputable exhaust specialist, but you'd need to see the full layout in person/get detailed drawings to confirm that one. I see no reason why it's not possible though.

IMHO, I'd go for the SC kit as it's something different, and would suit you car very well, but it depends on how you like your power delivery. Should be a great project, whichever one you decide to go for :)

Yes that is correct the option from VF Engineering is classed as a Supercharger as it is driven from the drive belt rather than the exhaust:
http://vf-engineering.com/carrera-996/ &. http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/vf-engineering-vf510-supercharger-system-porsche-9971-carrera-38l-0508-p-75023.html

The TPC Engineering option link is here: http://www.tpcracing.com/tpc-997-996-turbo-kit.html

As regarding the engine then yes surely the compression ratios are lower on a production turbo vehicle and both the kit manufacturers limit the boost pressure to prevent pre detonation and the effects of higher cylinder pressure vs engine reliability. But of course this is a "boy racers" way to add more HP by bolting on a turbo. I personally would not buy a vehicle that had been modified in such a way, however as this is my own vehicle then the option is there if desired.

Pricing in the UK for a kit fitted by the dealer is around £15K so not cheap, but if purchasing the Turbo version from USA then fitting yourself the cost should be around £8000 including the 20% import tax and FedEx. So a worthy project.... just don't tell the wife!
