997 C2S Suspension Problems - Saga Continues!

Some of you may remember my problem back in November last year with a suspension problem.....

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=161101&mpage=1&key=&#161549

....well the OPC didnt really know what the problem was and in the end they couldnt find anything broken. They changed both rear shockers and all the suspension mounts and drop links both front and rear and after test driving the car there seemed to be a dramatic difference and the car felt as it should be.

However over the past month things have gone wrong again with the car feeling just as bad as it was. To the point of feeling car sick when driving it!!!!

I was beginning to wonder whether it actually is a computer PASM fault, because the car literally feels different every time you get in it, then on the motorway this afternoon I was driving at speed and a warning came up on the dash (PASM failure), the car immediately felt completely different as if the computer had switched something off due to it being dangerous at high motorway speeds, and the suspension started to wobble around all over the place.

Anyone got any ideas? The car is going into another OPC on Friday next week to see if they can solve it.

Do you drive with PASM in normal or sport ordinarily?

The reason I ask is that on anything but the motorway or in traffic, normal mode is as you have indicated, rather like being in a boat!

The problem I find is that, say you are driving pretty sedately but just push on for a particular overtake etc and forget to hit the PASM switch, the car feels as if it has the suspension from a Chelsea Tractor! I truly thought it was game over on a dual carriageway one day until I managed to get sport switched on.

If you drive in sport a lot and the computer has a glitch, flicking back and forth between modes, it would really upset the balance.

I bought "used approved" so took the specification nearest to my requirements, however, if specifying from new I think I would ditch the PASM and have the -20mm with LSD option - or just get a GT3!

I rarely drive in Sport Mode because around our roads here in Yorkshire its just too bumpy.

When the PASM failure occured yesterday on the motorway, I tried to switch the car into Sport Mode and it just said "Sport Mode Failure".

However there is something seriously wrong with the cars suspension set up. It didnt drive like this when I bought the car.

Be firm with the OPC when you take the car in - 'don't give it back till it's fixed'. My C2S had the top links and bushes changed under warranty, and came back with a very loose front end. Took the senior technician out to demonstrate the problem and they took the car back and stripped it out and fixed the problem. Good as gold now

Peter, what sort of handling problems were you experiencing. Did you say it was the front top links you had replaced or the rears?

Thanks

Sorry, yes, 'twas the front. Had a creaky noise over humps etc. The bushes are a known fix, I believe, albeit not a recall item as fas as I know. When I got the car back the car felt (and sounded) loose over broken surfaces, but fine on good quality tarmac.
Took the technician out to demonstrate the problem, and to their credit they had the car a couple of days and it's now absolutely fine.

Had the car into another OPC this week and the mechanic found the fault within 5 minutes of road testing the car. He felt the car was rocking diagonally from corner to corner rather from side to side as I had reported. Back in the workshop he plugged in the diagnostics (after finding no broken suspension components.) The computer read out that the PASM module was faulty and was therefore setting the cars suspension settings on the softest posible setting.

Got to wait a couple of weeks for the new module to arrive before they can get it fitted, but fingers crossed this should rectify what has been a long process. Very pleased with the service that Stratstone at Wilmslow have given, the mechanic was very knowledgable. Still very angry that the original OPC (JCT Leeds) didnt find the fault after having the car in twice (and for lengthy periods of time as well!). Still you vote with your feet. They certainly wont be seeing my car again in their workshops!

A friend of mines 997 has just had its frount shocks changed. Not sure what the problem was. Sounds as if there could be a general problem with suspension?? ??
