997 C4S Interior Light Problem

My overhead interior lights stopped auto dimming after I disconnected the battery to fit a flying lead for a new battery charger. The lights in the doors still work fine. My local OPC tried fitting a new light unit, but that was not at fault. They now want to charge me time and materials to continue the diagnostics, and I'm apprehensive about that. I have a suspicion that it's a software problem, but the OPC are anticipating a wiring or a "control unit" issue - the coincidence of disconnecting the battery is too strong for me to think it's a wiring problem.
Anyone have similar experience, or can advise a top rate OPC or independent?
Thanks
GC
p.s. Don't have Sport Chrono package, which may have PCM options to manage interior lights?

Hi Gary and welcome. More info needed really! PCM 2.1 or 3. Where are you in the country - I can recommend a very good PC but not much use if you live in Aberdeen! When you say the interior lights have stopped auto dimming, do we take it that they don't come on at all when the door is opened? Or do they come on and not go out on their own when you turn on the ignition or after a period of time? I think from memory the standard period is 2 minutes but this can be set (certainly on PCM 3 cars) to any duration you choose. I can't remember what my Gen 1 car had![:(]

Thanks for the swift response - answers here
PCM 2.1 or 3 - don't know - how do I discover? - car is 03-2006 [ 06 plate ]
I'm in Yorkshire
In the central auto position on the overhead light unit, the lights stay on permanently - i.e. don't extinguish when the engine is started.
I did read about managing the delay, but I know my PCM doesn't have that facility

Well we now know the answer to one question - you have PCM 2.1[;)] I can't help with local PC - but I'm sure someone else can. I also see from another forum that you had this same problem nearly two years ago - what's happened in the meantime?
On the Tipec forum the advice was to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and reconnect, for someone who had exactly the same symptoms. Similar advice on PH. Problem solved on both occasions. Probably worth a try.

Same problem - 2 years old! - I just learned to live with it, until the 991 arrived [ in the showrooms ] and I figured that if I'm selling on my 997 then it should be 'complete'. Just the issue of the £75k gap between my car and a same spec 991.
So, first job in the morning will be to disconnect the battery and make a cuppa - thank you so far - will report outcome.

Tried the battery disconnect / reconnect trick - unfortunately it failed.

Recap - door lights work to spec. Overhead and footwell fail to dim on engine startup - they do however extinguish after locking the car [ abruptly after about 20 seconds, rather than dim ]

Back to the drawing board ?

So when you lock the car with the key fob it shuts off the power after 20secs or so and then the light goes out. When you say they fitted a new light unit do you mean the light itself or the control for the light? Have you tried just pulling and resetting the fuse for the interior lights? Can't see why that should be different to disconnecting the battery but you never know!

Fitted a new overhead light unit - based on the theory that the contacts had welded together - did this on a 'no win / no fee' basis - so my old unit is back in situ - hence my apprehension about pursuing with the OPC.

I'll try pulling the fuse - but it seems like a battery disconnect to me.
