997 C4S with bore score

Hi All,

I’ve got a 997.1 C4S with 100k miles done - just found out that the 6th cylinder is scored.

The car seems to run ok, no clacking noise etc apart from the cylinder 6 spark plug being covered in carbon build up (all sorted now).

I’m unsure what to do - sell or engine rebuild. Admitting the bore score would slash the asking price - £15-16k? The engine rebuild - that’s like £12k.

What would you do?

Thanks guys,

Jakub

Hi Jakub,

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. It’s a tricky decision, and really depends upon your attachment to your car and how long you intend to keep it.

An engine rebuild by a reputable company like Hartech probably will be something like £12k given that at 100k miles it will be sensible to do more than just a rebore - crankshaft and IMS bearings, timing chains, valve springs, etc., although much will depend upon what’s found when the engine is stripped. If you choose this route it’s advisable to have a conversation with the rebuilder to see what options are available and the likely repair costs.

Similarly, you should talk to a specialist Porsche breaker like 9 Apart to find out what you can get for the car in its current state.
