997 Cabrio Roof opening

I was driving along the other day and noticed that I could operate the cabrio hood at speeds of up to 45Mph. I have just recently moved from a 996 to a 997 Turbo S. My old car would only allow me to do this up to 30mph, and even the manual on the 997 says that is the limit.

Someone told me today that they think the limit has been raised, but the manual has not been updated. Has anyone else heard of this?

No issue of course - it's great to be able to open at slightly higher speeds, although I won't be using it as an airbrake!

Cheers,

James

I suspect that at over 30mph you could damage the mechanism when operating the roof. My car does not allow but is a little older. I would recommend the Smartop one touch opening system though. Have had this on several cabs and is extremely useful but this wont overide the 30mph limit.

x2- superb device...

Many thanks for your replies. Just had a look at Smartop and it does look good - I wonder whether it would invalidate the warranty though, so I might wait a couple of years.

In the meantime I'll just be sure to get below 30MPH as with my 996 I would simply hold the button down until the car slowed down, but I can't really do that now that the car is letting me open it at higher speeds.

The Smartop can be configured to be invisible to detection if there is a warranty issue. I know as I have had a warranty issue which was not affected. The only way that it can be detected in its "invisible" mode is if seen by naked eye. It is located behind the rear seats on the engine side of the seat bulkhead and would only be found if you had a problem with the roof electrics.

It is relatively easy to fit. Its other features like delayed opening of the boot lid and chirping when locking/unlocking the car are also useful.

Thanks for that. I might try it out! Need to run it past the boss ;-) She wasn't that impressed when I suggested winter tyres at a mere £3,900 but that's a different thread!

I've also noticed that the 997 Cab' roof operates perfectly well at speeds above 30mph, despite what the manual states. Only performed the open/close at high 30s though (when it's been more convenient to stay above 30mph eg. when in traffic) - haven't chanced it at over 40mph for fear of the drag factor stressing the mechanism.

Thanks for that. All good! I find I can always use it on the M25 [:D]
