997 Carrera falling short on expectation

I invite you all (or indeed whoever can be bothered) to comment on my experiences so far with my 997. The problems i have experienced are as follows, all leading to a rather crap Porsche experience;

1. Paint work peeling off or reacting in some way around various parts of the bodywork.
2. Very weak, graunching brakes
3. Wheels in appalling condition by virtue of the lacquer peeling and corroding, leaving a terrible finish
4. Headlamp washer jets ceased working
5. All light lenses misting
6. Gearbox refusing to disengage 1st gear

Now you may or may not be amazed to know that is a Feb 07 car that has done 6,000 miles and bought from Porsche Approved. Is this level of fault usual?

All experience and advice shall be gratefully received.

Thanks

Were these things all present when you purchased the car? You must have noticed at least the paint/wheels issues if so.

Also, were you told the cars history ie. was it a staff or demo car that has been treated poorly?

I assume you have fixed all these things under warranty right?

-- might be worth posting these questions in the 997 forum also as you will probably widen your audience for more replys.

I'm on my 3rd new porsche from my OPC and I have to say that although I do love the marque, standards and aftercare are slipping to the point of aggravation.

The ridiculous 2 yr warranty, lack of interest from Porsche GB when things go wrong (prevarication is the usual approach) and disinterested salesmen mean that I will be looking at an R8 or a Maserati Spyder next time. If they bring out an R8 Spyder it will be almost definite.

Shame, as I've enjoyed driving Porsches since the mid 80's (944) and older 911's.
I was considering a 998 cabrio, but after the OPC refused to sort out a bubbling roof rail 2 months out of warranty (the other one was replaced shortly before factory warranty elapsed) despite me being a very good customer I think I'll spend my cash elsewhere in future.

Loyalty is a two way street, Herr Weideking.

Paul, I'm sorry to hear of your woes, and that is unusual. Paint peeling-off and lacquer off the wheels is plain wrong and should be fixed under the paint warranty which I don't remember but could be 10 years ?

The brakes don't sound right at all, maybe new discs and pads, maybe new fluid ?

Headlight lenses do commonly mist-up.

Headlamp washers I've not heard of that not working before, but they're only simple and should be straight-forward to fix.

Gearbox stuck in first ? Not heard of that either.

You'll have to tell us which OPC and what they're doing for you. If you're getting nowhere perhaps an independent inspection by the AA or RAC would focus their minds ?

25 years of good experience with OPCs (Malaya, Charles Follet, Rivervale and, best all, Lovetts Swindon).

Likewise, each of the Porsches I have owned has been excellent.

Issues occur, for sure, but they've always been dealt with promptly and efficiently.

I can fully understand why you feel the car is falling short of your expectations, apart from the lights misting up which I have read about on Porsche and others makes I've not really seen anything like these sorts of issues on the same car..

Brakes on Porsche are and have been described similar to your experiences but sometimes it can be the lack of servo on the Porsche that makes them feel weak, however with the graunching possibly not.

For a car that age it should all be covered by warranty and I really hope the OPC does sort it out for you, I am aware of one member actually getting new lighting units due to them misting up...

Best of luck and don't let it completely ruin your experience, because when there good, there good..

The fact that you have various body areas and the wheels with finish problems, suggest to me that the car has been subjected to a damaging atmosphere or treatment.

I'm with Oliver on this one, similar experience over 25 years with Malaya, AFN and Guildford OPC. Good service and great cars, in the main. Paul, your car sounds unusual to say the least. We've had various issues from Forum members including lights misting, graunching brakes etc, but rare to hear of all your woes at once. Definitely needs to be taken seriously by your OPC, whoever it is, and straight to their DP. This should not happen, for sure, let us know how things progress.
