997 Fuel Guage

Just a quick one, this has happened 3 times too me ..
When I run the car into the reserve the closest garage to me only sells normal unleaded therfore I normaly put 20 pounds worth and then drive into town to get the superunleaded. Anyway when I put 20 pound in the guage does not move of the red light and as soon as I top up with super unleaded the guage responds straight away, am I missing something here?

Also can the car be run on normal unleaded for long periods of time?

Thanks Guys

The AWD models have asaddle fuel tank and this can cause this to happen.
It does say in the manual( nope I've never read mine either) that a splash of fuel may not be indicated..

Its happened to me many times and others I know of, almost a FAQ
I do know some that have had a faulty gauge and the OPC have fitted a new one- not sure if it ever fixed the issues though...

The car will adapt to normal fuel quite happily... as will a Prius [;)]

I agree with Gary. The tanks will self balance after a while but the gauge is calibrated to show empty even with fuel on board.

As regards fuel grade, anti-knock sensors ensure the engine can't be damaged by inferior fuels. The ECU will retard ignition if necessary, preventing detonation, but it may take some time and several tanks of premium for the ECU to reinstate ignition advance and this will adversely affect engine performance in the interim.

Premium fuel is cleaner and suits the motor better so avoid using low grade stuff regularly if you can.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Clive
