997 - Gearbox problem

Hi. I was driving my 3 year old, 25k miles, 997 C2S in traffic this evening. As I shifted from first gear to second gear, I noticed the gearstick went slack and I couldn't change out of first. I arranged for the car to be recovered home tonight and will need to contact Porsche on Tuesday.

I would appreciate any feedback on what the likely problem and bill might be. I suspect something has become disconnected and hopefully the repair is relatively straightforward?

Sorry to hear of your trouble. It's annoying to be left stranded for whatever reason, but like you I suspect it's a cable related problem and hopefully a relatively simple fix. Please keep us informed of the eventual diagnosis.

That happened to Jezza Clarkson when he was testing a 997 back in 2004. It took Porsche technicians 5mins to fix. So maybe no big deal?

Really - I seem to recall that vaguely!!? Do you know if it's the sort of thing they should be able to come out and fix? I presume that would be a cheaper option than them having to recover it back to their workshop (ca. 10 miles away)?

Thanks for the responses!

Assuming you have a Porsche warranty, Porsche assist will collect your car and arrange a loaner. With or without warranty your still looking at a workshop visit for diagnosis and repair. Porsche Centres do not hold many spares, which would have to come from Reading, usually next day. Keep us posted of outcome.

I thought with JC it was the gear knob that came off ???

I'd of thought (and hoped) that it would be a cable issue and that to replace/repair the cables they would want to see it on a ramp, OK if by the selector a possible fix but I shouldn't imagine it would be possible under any other circumstances..

Robmeister, please to let us know what it turns out to be and how it was resolved.

The gearknob coming off in his hand was a different occasion. The event I recall resulted in a floppy lever. But maybe I'm just getting old with a fading memory.[:D]

I seem to remember when I had my C2S that it was recalled for something to do with the gearchange cable.

I spoke to Porsche yesterday about the likely problem - they suspect the gear cable(s) have snapped and need to be replaced.

Gear cable approx. £185 plus 2-3 hours labour, so all in approaching £500.

Fortunately the RAC will transport the car to Porsche as it's a follow-on call, and Porsche were closed on Sunday when it happened.

I have to say though, in a 3 year old car that has been fully serviced and certainly not 'abused', I find it very disappointing that this should happen.

I agree, but I'd have money that Porsche don't "make" the cable, even then we have to admit things do break sometimes
If you have the extended warranty then not really a problem unless they try to say wear and tear item...
Even so, it would be worth mentioning your last line to the service desk to see if any goodwill can be offered... especially if its been dealer serviced where you are taking it..

I note that you say 3 years old, but not the mileage which I'd of thought would have more to bear on a broken selector cable.

Tiff Needell had the floppy gearstick, fixed in 5 minutes, when he test drove the original 2.5 Boxster

Got the car back. It was a broken gear cable. Cost £373, the cable being £118 plus VAT. I realised afterwards that I may have been overcharged for labour as I had received a call at 3:40pm on Friday to say the car was going into the workshop 'in 10 minutes' and would be ready for collection at 5pm. This suggests that there was an hours labour which I think is about £100 per hour.
