997 Gen 2 Targa 4 MANUAL 5000 mile Report.

I've had the car from new for a little over 4 months and have racked up a decent amount of mileage and a huge amount of smiles during that time.
The car is a weekend driver and has also taken us on a 2500 mile trip through France and Switzerland down to Tuscany. It hasn't and won't not go anywhere near a track day.
As a possible assist to anybody thinking of buying something similar, here are my impressions.

Positives
It's a huge amount of fun to drive and be around.
The performance is fantastic in all respects. Effortless long distance cruising and real sports car fun on the winding hilly bits.
The Targa is immensely practical with an enormous capacity to swallow luggage. And with the glass roof the cabin is a great place to spend time.
I have averaged more than 26 mpg over the 5000 miles. And used 2 litres of oil (in a 1000km slot between 5 and 6000)
I have found the Sat Nav extremely effective in the UK and during my holiday across Europe (but see below). The Dynamic Routing is excellent and really saved us time..
The USB music option is terrific as (especially with Bose).
So too, is the phone Bluetooth link
Incidentally, the Road Pilot Micro that I had fitted has been faultless, including while in France and Italy.

Niggles
The Sat Nav data is at least a year out of date "" not a problem in the UK, but in France and Italy where they are still building and opening new roads it's a pain.
Restricted rear view when the roof is down.
Why don't the wing mirrors fold in automatically?
No Long Wave radio so no Test Match Special!! Anybody know a DAB adaptor?

Negatives
The tyre noise is really intrusive "" especially on the poor surfaces of UK roads.
Despite, deliberately, going for 18 inch wheels, the suspension feels too harsh at slow (urban) speeds
(I'm going to do a separate post on these two items and ask for ideas)

And that's it.
Do I wish I had chosen the PDK? My OPC lent me one for the best part of a day before I made the decision and I went for the manual. I still think that was the right decision for me as long as I'm not in a file of slow moving traffic, but those are easier to avoid with the TMC switched on!

If you're thinking about it - go for it. This life is not a rehearsal.

Thank you for taking the time to post this up.
We're looking at a new section for owners reviews (bit like the 996 guys have done) and I thank you for giving us a head start on it [:)]
