I have seen the beam on Porsche Xenons raise when they are turned on. The lights are set slightly high on my 997. They do not move when powered on and I wonder if this is normal now for the Gen2s?

Nick

All xenons should auto-level, you can't adjust them manually (there is some legislation on this to prevent blinding others) so if it's not moving then my assumption would be that it's levelled correctly...

I have the directional lights and have found that if the lights are on and you switch off the engine and then turn it back on (like in a stalling situation which, ahem, of course never happens to me) then the lights recalibrate so on mine they swivel left/right and up/down...you could try that to see if there is movement...

What makes you think they're off?

Thanks, turning the lights on and off does not cause a re-calibrate but switching the ignition does. So all that seems fine and I can see them move.

On a previous Porsche with Bi Xenons one in fifty cars would flash but with this 997 it's more like one in ten. [8D]
That's why I think they are out of alignment.

I know Gen1 could be adjusted- I had the same issue as you Nick. It was one of the adjusters on the side of the headlamp unit.
I would have thought a similar setup on the Gen2..[&:]

Thanks Gary, I did have a look behind the bottom grommet and failed to locate the adjustment screw for the hex key which is in the toolkit.

Nick

Nick the box spanner in your tool kit is for removal of the lamp unit. It is not for adjustment. If you're lamps are bi-xenon, they are self levelling. Because of their brightness, oncoming traffic often confuse dipped xenon with full beam.

Clive.

Hi Clive, there is mention of a height adjustment in my owners manual in the practical tips section.

I get more "compliments" with the Gen II tt than I ever did with the Gen I. Subjectively, I do think these lights given better illumination on both dipped and - particularly - main beam than either those of my previous (Gen I) tt or the Audi Allroad we have (both of which have Bi-Xenon lights).

Nick,

You're quite right.

I've just checked mine and there are 2 rectangular apertures sealed with grommets beneath the carpet in the luggage compartment. To access the adjusters you need to also feed the box spanner through round apertures in the inner skin - one is for vertical, the other for lateral adjustment. It's best done at a Porsche Centre really. I'm sure they won't charge much.[8|]

Good advice thanks, I will have it checked out by Porsche to be safe.

I had mine done by my friendly OPC, I was a little fed up with lighting the tree tops at night.[:D]
They never charged me- but then it was still under warranty from new.

Reasonable result then. Let's hope that's solved your problem.
It seems to me when you're being blinded by someone else's lights, the last thing you want to be doing is switching your own lights on full too - it just means neither of you is able to see! [:(]

Clive.
