I currently run a low miles 996 2003 Targa and am looking to upgrade, I have seen a very nice 33k miles Gen I 997 C4S Cab, manual with full OPC history. But! I am still worried about engine reliability and have no real experience of the model to fall back on. My problem is do I worry this to death and wait until I can justify a Gen II and lose even more on the 996 or go in now, comments welcome!

All cars have their fair share of problems but the 997 is a fairly reliable piece of kit.

My own car is a daily driver and has 69,000 on the clock. It runs and pulls like a dream and uses no oil at all.

If you are at all worried about engine failure on any car then I suggest you buy either an OPC warranty or Used Vehicle Warranty (link on the PCGB Website) which is extremely competitively priced at around half that of the OPC price.

I am sure that there will be others who will come along here and have more time to go into much more details that me. But for me the Gen 1 has been, and still is, a super car.

Hi

I own a Gen I 2007 C4S bought it used 3 years ago, ok I do very little miles its at 19000.00! but no issues at all. I too felt the same as you but resigned myself to the cost of the warranty from Porsche in case of any major issues engine wise.

They are a great car and it is difficult to imagine they can go wrong ( I am sure a few do ) but I guess thats what a warranty is for, dead money until you need it. Take the plunge!!

Cheers JP

I personally think the reliability issues have been blown out of proportion by the forums and media, however it is true that some 2004-2005 cars do seem more prone to the engine scoring issue.
As mentioned, you could put a warranty on the car £1100 odd from the OPC to ensure that you have no concerns- being as the car is new to yourself.
Whilst it's not comprehensive, do take a look at the members area and the warranty survey, it shows what sort of issues members have had and at what mileage etc..

Thanks guys the base line I am picking up is extend the 3 month dealer warranty to something robust for 12 months, so much appreciated!

Or buy from a Porsche Centre. They may cost a bit more but you will get 2 years warranty included. I'm sure there are plenty of fine examples out there![;)]

Life is too short! Get a car with a warranty and enjoy it! [:)]

There are problems with all cars, doesn't matter how much you pay. We should just enjoy them more instead of trying to read the future!
