997 Gen2 Oil Consumption

My nephew has owned his 2009 997 Gen2 C2S with 37,000 miles on the clock for about a year. I was a bit surprised to hear how much oil it consumes (about a litre every 2000 miles) compared to my 2.9 Cayman G2 (with 16,000 miles), which hasn't shown any movement on the oil gauge in about 1500 miles since I bought it.

What are you chaps with DFI engines experiencing in terms of oil consumption?

Richard
My GTS gen 2 has covered 28k and tends to be used for fairly weekend runs plus a couple of track days - not daily commute in traffic .
I've been surprised that it uses virtually no oil and since it's last oil service in 2013 and £8k miles has needed half a litre in total if that.

As you note oil consumption does seem to vary widely

Hi Richard, I've own my Gen2 since Jan 2009. It is used daily and has always used about 1 litre of oil every 1200-1600 miles.

Thanks chaps. There doesn't seem to be a standard answer for this. I scanned RennTech and there were a few posts from people with similar experiences. It seems to me that 1,500 miles per litre AND 10,000 miles per litre are typical figures quoted.

Not that he had any concerns about it himself, but I'll pass these on and tell him he needn't even start to worry!

Richard,
My GTS used about 3L during its first 20,000 miles, but like Tony has not used any since its first service in March 2013 and another 15,000 miles. My previous Boxster was the same, and once properly run in used no additional oil between service schedules.

I am probably not adding much my confirming that my 2009 997 Gen 2 C2 3.6 PDK uses about the same amount of oil as Dino's car. Consumption a bit higher than on other cars I have owned but it has not worried me.

Thanks again for the responses. Interesting that the 2009 cars seem to use more than the GTS model. Perhaps there were some material changes over time, although I can't find any differences when I had a quick look on PET.

My Gen 2 turbo (2010) would appear to not use any oil between services yet the Gen 2 C2S (2008) before it used a litre/1500 miles. I've always found the large variation between similar cars very odd!

We've established that similar cars have very different oil consumption figures. My cars; Boxster, 996 and cayman, have never flagged up a lack of oil between services so I have not lost any sleep over the issue.

However, would it not be worth flagging this up with the factory for comment and explanation?

David

Another GTS owner here and since an annual oil change in May this year, oil reading hasn't moved one bar. Have flagged to OPC on several occasions, but advised all fine. Whether I have full confidence in the accuracy of the reading is another matter, but consumption does seem to vary.

Just to add to the debate, my MY2010 Cayman S has required less than a litre of top-up oil in more than 15,000 miles of mainly open road driving, including some track days.

Jeff

My 2009 Gen2 3.4 Cayman S did about 47k miles of mixed driving from new (incl Germany, Spain, mountain passes and the odd track day) and over that time I added less than 1.5 litres in total between routine services to keep it within the top two marks on the electronic gauge.

Presumably as Porsche deleted the dipstick, they do!

They may do but 991 GT3 owners have been reporting readings that do not seem to tally with pre top-up + volume of oil added.

Always a lot of chat about this on the US forums [the Americans like to change their oil more often than we do here].

The boxer engine layout doesn't help and apparently Porsche's recommendation is to allow the oil to drain for at least an hour. Even then residual oil remains, so anomalies in the amount of top-up oil can occur easily.

Jeff

Ref the comment that Porsche recommend that the oil be allowed to drain for an hour, this doesn't apply to my (all?) 997 Gen 2, as the engine has to be up to temperature with the engine idling before it will start the oil measurement. I've had mine 17 months now with a service 9 months ago and haven't had to top up once yet - I've done 10k miles in that 17 months BTW.

Regards

John

Whilst your statement is correct John, you misunderstood my comment. I was referring to the time recommended when changing the oil and not when monitoring the oil level. Unfortunately, residual oil sometimes leads to over-filling at the service if the recommended refil amount is used by the technician.
