997 GT3 kit

Hi there

I am looking into GT3 kits for the 997 (I know, some of you aren't going to like it) and was wondering what are the main differences between the 997c2s and the gt3 in terms of the bodystyling? Does the GT3 have the wider c4s body or is it the same width as the c2s and does the gt3 have different skirts to the c2s?

Also how accurate are gt3 kits and does anyone know of any good companies or suppliers/fitters of gt3 conversion kits? The ones I have found so far are from

http://www.prestigebodykits.com/products/body-parts-997-type-gt3-c-2_15_4_90.html
http://www.ap-car-design.de/
http://www.v-zweeden.com/
http://www.design911.co.uk/

Does anyone know any of these and can anyone personally recommend any of them?

Thanks

Trev

One other idea would be to use official Porsche GT3 parts. Yes it would cost much more but I am guessing the end result would be a much more authentic look, fit and finish. However, would official Porsche parts require significant modification to fit the C2s?

I've got a 997 C2S that has a factory aerokit fitted - this is essentially the same as the GT3 (not RS) with the exception of the rear bumper.
The rear bumper is different, as it has side slats, and the exhaust is centrally located.
Oh, and the front bumper doesnt have the air vent like the GT3 does.
The GT3 is std body, the RS is widebody.
I personally wouldnt go aftermarket, but it is your choice, as it's your car !
fitting wise - not difficult, all parts are bolt on. I think Jasmine Porschalink sell a full kit for around 3K - I also think that they will fit & paint.

only issue that you need to be aware of is the front entry angle changes significantly - you will scrape the lower lip on drive transitions and speedbumps

I think it's only when people put the GT3 badge on the back that there tends to be disapproval.

No thanks, ill be sticking with the carrera S badge. I agree, I don't want to pretend the car is something its not but just want to enhance the look.

Trev, I've had my C2S from new and after nearly 3 years of ownership was starting to get bored with it even though I rarely use it. My car only covers 2 to 3 thousand miles a year, lives in a heated garage under it's own comfort blanket and still smells like new inside, basically it's mint.

Boredom meant I looked at swapping it for either a 997tt or GT3 but when I got offered what I consider to be peanuts by my local OPC for what is virtually a new car I decided to have the GT3 aerokit fitted and enjoy it for a few more years.

The C2S is the same bodyshell as the GT3 (the GT3 RS has the wider C4S bodyshell), and the only difference is 5mm in the wheelbase which nobody will notice unless they start getting tape measures out, so the front and rear bumpers will bolt straight on. The rear deck lid and air scoops are different on the GT3 to the alternative carrera aerokit, the air intake scoops are separate pieces, the spoiler angle is adjustable and there's a separate gurney flap on the lower wing, whereas the carrera aerokit has a single piece decklid and there's obviously no vent in the front bumper of that option. I chose to go for the GT3 aerokit using genuine Porsche GT3 parts after discussing the mods with Lloyds, the local Porsche approved bodyshop and Tech 9 Motorsport who carried out the painting and fitting respectively.

The exhaust must be changed for centre exit tailpipes and you can either fit the genuine GT3 item (expensive) or go for one of the many after market GT3 exhausts, I went for the FVD Brombacher sports exhaust all in stainless and the sound and looks are superb. Also the GT3 decklid will not close with the C2S fan and standard induction housing, so mine runs with a GT3 fan and the EVOMS 997 V-Flow air induction system which gives a great induction sound under acceleration.

Even though the C2S is 10mm lower than the standard Carrera it still runs 15-20mm higher than the GT3 so I went for Techart sport springs which lower the car by 25mm and finished the look off with a set of Techart (BBS) 20" gloss black formula GTS alloys with polished rim. Add in the Techart 385BHP re-map and you've suddenly got an awsome motor, as if it wasn't before!!

The car now turns more heads than ever and on the rare occasion I leave it parked anywhere it pulls a crowd, so if you're the shy and retiring type think hard before you do this mod.

I had all this work done before the credit crunch adversely affected 2nd hand prices of 997tt's and GT3's and I'm not sure I would make the same decision again, it'd probably be wiser to put the cost of the mods towards a 997tt or GT3 but then again I've now got a fairly unique car that I'm really pleased with and that's what counts.

Sorry for the long waffling reply but you got me on a topic I could talk for hours about. [:D]

Wow, now thats a good response. Thanks for all the info that has really helped. I think that if I am going to go down the GT3 kit route then Ill definitely opt for official porsche parts so its good to know what will and won't fit and the modifications required.

Do you have any pictures of your car before/during/after the conversion as I'd be very interested to see the transformation. Also if possible would you be able to PM/email me a rough idea of what your conversion cost. I know thats a little cheeky but would really help me work out if the conversion would make sense financially.

Thanks for your help

Trev, I've got loads of pictures so will e-mail you some together with an indication of pricing as soon as I get chance.

Thanks, that would be great

Check prices with your OPC - last advert i saw was about £5.5k fitted and painted. Add in 10% discount for parts and there might not be that much difference in price by going elsewhere.

It won't make any sense financially. You should only do it because you want and like it, and don't expect to get your money back.

A Factory fitted kit might add some value, and an OPC fitted kit might be considered ok as it won't infringe any warranty or paintwork issues. But an after-market kit, fitted by a third party, could be detrimental to future values.
