997 Hardtop or not?

I recently purchased my Porsche 911 cabriolet, as I haven't got a garage, its kept outside with a 'top cover' fitted. I'm considering buying and fitting a hardtop to a. allow me to use it more in the run up to winter (without the need to ensure I get it home and refit the top cover before it rains!) and b. to help protect the soft top during the winter months. I was hoping to get advise on -
1. Is this as simple as it sounds?
2. Does the soft top need any preparation if it's to be kept down for 4 / 5 months
3. Is a hard top easy to fit / remove without any 'professional assistance'?
4. Is a hard top weather proof?
If all the above is generally OK - are there any West Midlands suppliers you would recommend?

Your feedback would be appreciated! Thanks

Wayne

No need to do any preparation for fitting hardtop , just ensure your top is clean and dry before folding back. Very easy to fit but you will need someone to help you lift it on, not very heavy. My wife helps me with the top on my 996 turbo with no problem. As I garage mine my top has been put in bag and hung from roof of garage since I bought the car over 5 years ago. You can pick them up secondhand , might be worth seeing if the 996 will fit if so may be easier to get hold of one. You might need fitting kit as well

The soft tops are very robust so just a dry and clean the top before putting the roof on which will need 2 people to fit and is pretty easy to do. You will need to check the vin no. to make sure you get the right top hopefully a 996 one will be okay as loads about. Just make sure you get the hexagonal lever for locking it down.

Most owners don't bother about a hard top for winter use as they are so robust, I only advise people to cover up if really heavy snow is due.

Thanks Geoff, reading Gordons post below sounds like I'm being over cautious and the soft top (cleaned and protected properly) would be fine! I wasn't sure if a 996 would fit, as you said there's a few about.
