997 Mezger turbo engine

I'm not at all into modding cars but, this is a good read as a testament to the high quality of the STOCK components of the 997 Mezger turbo engine.

Thanks for sharing.

Yup, my modified engine is going strong after 4 years, and i am still loving it!

The Mezger engines in my Turbo and my GT 3 have been brilliant and inspire huge confidence. In my opinion they will be more collectable and desirable in the future over cars that have the DFI engine. Porsche has become more commercial so we are not likely to see the likes of a Mezger again. Understandable but sad in some ways

The internet community can continue to slate the 997.1 Turbo all they like ("boring", "soul-less", "bling wheels" etc etc)...but surely, no one can argue about integrity & pedigree of the engine ??

Wheels, exhaust & suspension setup can easily be changed to suit ones personal taste....changing the engine however is not so easy [:D]

My car still brings me great driving pleasure and with posibility to tune / tweak safely in yrs to come, can't see me getting bored of it any time soon....even if it is now only worth £2.75 (apparently)

International 'best performance engine' of the year award 2008 (Turbo/GT2).

Then the next year they retired it for the DFi to start on their EU emission targets.

I have to get myself one of these in time. I think it's the only car that could tempt me away from my Spyder, although my son (7 yrs old) is adamant that I should keep the Spyder. He doesn't seem to mind that his Mum can't ever come along when we go for a blast [:D]

I was tempted to test drive one but I haven't had the Spyder long and I think, after experiencing 620-680Nm of torque across such a wide rev range, it'll make me realise how much I have to change gear at the moment. So i'll refrain until the time comes to get one [:)]

As has been said, the values are falling towards offering a ridiculous amount of car for the money, as evolution takes its course and new designs take over the mantle. With that in mind, after the 991 turbo is with us, I may be ready to pounce on a 997 Mezger turbo bargain.

What they achieved with the 997 GT2 RS engine was probably not the end what they could've done over the coming years, if it wasn't for the environmental constraints that we now have to (understandably) consider. All good things must come to an end I guess - but when we see 620bhp from the DFI engine and it goes racing, all will be forgiven [:D] The DFI engine is yet to be as proven to be as strong and durable, but it has been around a few years now and hasn't put a foot wrong, so I won't knock it and i'm happy to have one in the back of my Spyder. Still want a Mezger though if i'm thinking about a long term keeper supercar - an over engineered (they can't make them that way any more), race proven engine at a bargain price - no brainer. [:)]

Thanks, I didn't know that. Just had a look, it was voted above some very new designs that year like the BMW V10.

If I could have both I would!

I know the manual vs tip debate has been done countless times but after reading this I can't fathom whether tip is better to go for if it's NOT your daily driver rather than if it IS (usual sterotype is the other way around). I know it's down to personal choice but, any turbo tip owners regret going for tip?
P.S. This is not a tip bashing question. On the contrary. I'm interested in what the tip is like to live with.
