997 PDK gearbox

Apparently Porsche will present PDK (porsche double clutch) at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt (September) for the 911.

Anyone have a clue which models Porsche will lead with for introducing PDK?

I have heard different things. Some sources say Porsche will start off with Boxter/Cayman models as the PDK can't handle the power of 911 range yet. Then they will work up the power-tree as the PDK is further developed.

Other sources say they will start with the introduction of the GT2, so completely opposite to the first rumour.

I've been personally told by my OPC that PDK won't be out on the Turbo until at least MY08.

For those of you that don't already know, PDK will be the Porsche equiv of Audi/VW's DSG. Here's a little info on DSG: http://cars.about.com/od/thingsyouneedtoknow/a/ag_howDSGworks.htm

I'm also wondering why Porsche couldn't just steel the DSG type gearbox off the Bugatti Veyron now that they have so many shares in VW?

"¦that would certainly get round the power handling issues of PDK that Porsche are said to be having.

I was told, by someone who should know, that it will be introduced on the mainstream 997s in tandem with the 'facelift' in 2008 for the 2009MY.

However, it is conceivable that it could be seen beforehand on the new GT2.

New rumour going round today that the PDK will be released next summer, a full year before the 2008 facelift.

The release will apparently be across the whole Porsche range and will be replacing the current Tiptronic gearbox.

No word on whether Porsche have solved their problems with running PDK in the more powerful 911 models, so Turbo/GT3/GT2 may be a longer wait.

Rumours come and go with this product. One might have expected to see it on the new Turbo back in July but that came and went, similarly with the GT3...
Talk to some dealers and they hardly seem aware of the capability, others claim it will never happen.

Cynically I wonder if Porsche have really had problems with PDK, after all didn't they invent it when they were running much higher bhp race cars, i.e. if they had wanted to produce it, e.g. for the Turbo launch then they quite probably could have done so. Ultimately they probably haven't seen enough demand to change from Tiptronic as they are still selling all their cars well in advance.

Regarding the Bugatti question, I suspect the parts involved here are not viable for cost effective mass production that Tiptronic demands. I think they sell more Tips than manuals these days, at least that has been the case with the new Turbo (I am told).

Meanwhile perhaps they have moved on from PDK in favour something else : the graphed results are very interesting. www.zeroshift.com

This might appear a daft question, but when you say facelift in 2008 for 2009MY, does that mean that we can't actually but a facelifted 997 until, say, April 2009?

The Porsche model year normally switches over from August. So, for example, the 2007 MY commenced with cars delivered from September '06 onwards.

New models do get launched part way through the year, but 'facelifts' usually correspond with the new model year - the new Cayenne being an exception..

Right, so, if i'm following (and assuming the 997 gets face-lifted for 2009MY) then the earliest that it's going to be available is Aug' 2008?

That was the intention as at May this year. However, if 997 sales start to slow, and Porsche want to bring the 998 forward, then it is conceivable that the 'facelift' could be Sept '07.

Sept 2007 would also be my guess right now for the facelift.

The PDK introduction *may* be tied to a patent that Porsche sold VW 13 years ago and runs out in 2008. So perhaps that's why there is a delay in bringing PDK out.

One of the Rennteam site guys over in Germany drove along side a facelift 997 on the Autobarn for 30 mins back in Aug and took some pics:

The car appeared to have DSG style gear paddles behind the steering wheel, so it does seem Porsche are ready for this technology.
