997 Sports Exhaust & 991 sound!

Ive been lucky enough to be given a new Cayman S whilst my 997s is in for some work... had the cyaman for a week and was fun at first until I got into a new 991 Carrera 4 which was completely amazing. Comparing my 997 S to the 991 4, I would say I firstly love the extra space of the 991... and 4 wheel drive isnt a bad thing either... what i love the most however is the exhaust sound of the 991.

The 991 4 has a sports exhaust and my 997 also has a sports exhaust... the only problem is that the 991 sounds a hell of a lot better... deeper, louder and has a kick back at higher revs... absolutely stunning. The 997 is quiter and just doesnt sound like that...

does anyone know how to make a 997 S with sports exhaust sound anything like the 991 with sports exhaust?

Thanks

R

You can unplug the vacuum solenoid which controls the 997 sports exhaust flaps. This leaves the exhaust in loud mode all the time and it does not go quiet between 30 and 50 mph as the PSE does. It's a brown electrical plug on the right hand side of the engine bay. It then sounds really good all the way through the rev range.

hi Clive - thanks for that! is it at all possible to take a photo of the wire to remove as im a bit nervous in removing the wrong thing... would really appreciate it... thanks

In that case it's a black plug on the RHS of the engine bay, up above the intake manifold.

That's from a GT3, but it's the same plug as the gen2 so you know what you're looking for. Give it a squeeze and pull, then tie it up out of the way. Don't forget to plug it back in once a month or so to let the actuators move else they'll seize.

If you still can't get it from that, then I can always grab a pic of my engine bay when I get home.

Thanks Ekona.. That worked... now all I need is more noise lol... Ive asked a porsche specialist if they can remove the secondary cats... Will wait to hear baxk and update here.... Cheers

Removing the centre silencer for a Sharkwerks bypass is something I'm considering, should sound nice and meaty :)

hi dan - ive heard the names fabspeed and AWE as well as Sharkwerks bantered around a bit... also discussions between whether x pipes or pipes with bends in them sound better etc... all a bit confusing... if you do get the sharkwerks bypass installed can you please let me know if it was worth it so then ill do the same thing :)

i just noticed you got the exact same car as me... 997.2 c2s pdk - good choice... what colour is yours? this is mine:

Polar opposite, basalt black but we do have the same wheels! Mine are body coloured with the polished rim though.

I looked at the two other options you mentioned, and I personally feel the Sharkwerks one is the best engineered. Not the cheapest though, sadly!

hi dan - My alloy lips are also polished but maybe not so visible in the pic ... also the centers are not silver but slightly grey...

I also did some reading just now about hte exhaust... it looks like the Sharkwerks has better "flow" in the design... i like the idea of that... i saw this link: http://www.sharkwerks.com/products.php?pid=193 - i guess thats the one your speaking about?

Seems like a pretty simple job to get this swapped out... might give this a go as well :)

I disconnect the vacuum pipe from the PSE on my old C4S and it sounded epic ........... 1000 times better than my current 997tt .

Hi Dan - Check out this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlhLxndy91E - they are saying the over/under pipes like the sharkwerks are not as good as the x-pipes by fabspeed... *confused* !!

Has anyone in this forum got a 997.2 and successfully got much better/louder/deeper sound by way of a cat bypass? If so please speak up and tell us what you got and what you did !!! thanks!!

That video is by Fabspeed though, so I'm not surprised they're saying that! [:D]
