997 - squeaks and rattles - fact or fiction

Is this a common problem with these cars. Do OPC fix these if they occur ? - I really will get frustrated if rattles are part of its "character".

Appreciate peoples findings

some are.

But it needs a long run. I do find though quite a lot of vibration when cold, and this shakes the thing to bits, just look at the passenger seat. Mind you the wife seems to like it[;)]

I am going to save up another list for the OPC to have a go at soon, I'm sure by summer all will be well

Mine still rattles but I haven't had it booked in yet for trim refitting but I expect OPC to put it right and will annoy them until they do. It is only on really bad B road surfaces that it is noticeable (or any road with PASM sport on) and not nearly as bad as my experience with Boxsters.

If it's any consolation, my 996 has a collection of rattles.

The main one, that I had fixed in the first week, was a manufacturing issue where the relay for the rear windscreen wiper was not attached and rattled against the rear trim.

The main one at the moment is the passenger seat. Tickover is the resonant frequency of the back rest. It is slowly vibrating itself to bits. I move the angle every few days to temporarily shut it up.

There are various other squeaks, one from the centre console somewhere and a couple from the rear. However, the warmer the weather, the less they squeak.
On the previous C4S, it squeaked in the winter (until warm), but not in the summer. It's all to do with thermal expansion.
I will check it all in the summer.

However, I ignore it all at the moment. I've got 12 speakers for when driving slowly, and 450bhp of flat 6 + wind noise for when "pressing on". You can spend ages messing about with trim, for little reward and the noises will just come back.
Unless it is really bad, you have to really consider if it is worth it.

(Of course the hard core members will recommend ditching the trim, since you should have a CS spec or harder. If you have a bare shell and fixed back seats, there's nothing to make any noise, and even if it does you can't hear it above the transmission, engine, suspension and stones pinging the arches. Being soft has its disadvantages.[;)])

Still happy after five months and no rattles. Better than my old 996 in this regard, and I still remember the rear window squeak on the 993...

No rattles after 4 months and 2,300 miles although I have noticed that the passenger's seat is a little shaky when the car is idling - no sound from it though.

You are right about the seat, most of the rattling is coming from that. Bit of a problem when two of them go out to check for rattles, when one of them is sitting on the damm thing[]

1100 miles on my S and I've finally located the rattle that comes and goes. It's coming from my handbrake lever. Dunno if the person with the noise in his central console wants to check his. The noise stops if I hold the lever.

My passenger seat also shakes when empty and at idle - eg stopped at traffic lights, but I don't get any noise from that.

Opened the sunroof for the first time this weekend. and you guessed it...rattles like hell. []
Now I have a new one from inside the dash passenger side. Still one on the Pass door; the seat; rear off side side panel;[][]
Well at least I'm building a more personal relationship with the OPC, and the car they are supplying whilst it's in, one of them 4x4 Porsche's V6 job, kids are looking forward to that I have to say[;)]

ORIGINAL: DirtyHarry

I've got an intermittent rattle on the centre console, another which seems to be emanating from the dial covers (Speedo, oil etc)[]. There is also a really annoying rattle, again intermittent, coming from the seatbelt height adjustment lever both driver and passenger side []. Shaking passenger seat at idle but no noise.

Yeh had most of them too[8|]...been there done that[:)][:)]
it is so annoying, []

1400 Miles in 4 weeks and no rattles etc. Although the passenger seat does shake when the engine is idle (although I do not have it on idle long[;)]).

I shall not tell my wife about the shake just in case she suddenly becomes interested in the car.

I get an occasional rattle from the top of the dash, but it is not too bad.

The only other rattle comes from the porsche umbrella next to the passenger seat. :)
