997 Turbo advice

Morning all,
Was at Fat Boys Diner meet on Saturday afternoon which was all good fun. My dream car a black/black gen 1 Turbo was there and I have finally decided I want to trade in my C4S for one.
Apart from the sport chrono any options that must be on my list?
I hear these cars are basically bullit proof but any threads I have missed on issues they can have radiators etc?
Any advice greatly appreciated..

Radiators have been an issue, they have been on all models but the Turbo does seem more open to the corrosion- not so much about damage from the front which you would think to be the main issue!

VTG had a corrosion issue but dealt with via a service note and I would imagine all have been seen to by now.

Sports Chrono is the option to have, more so for resale value as cars without seem to be looked down upon??
Adaptive seats and heated is high on many peoples list, the others are very much down to preference including PCCB

Yes I have driven a 996 Turbo S with TIP loads and hated it...my C4S is a Manual with short shift so would hope to get that...not a silly priced option to add either even if not on the car...
 
Mine is a black and black Oct 2007 model (I can send a pic) and is tiptronic, I agree its not as good as the new GEN2 pdk version but as I commute in it and live in the London/SE, this has been the right choice for me. It has sports chrono plus, 6cd, phone system, carbon pack, electric seats, heated seats, side skirts, park assist, sunroof, rear wiper, cruise control and multi function steering wheel, 18750 miles, extended warranty, new michelin's all round, new brakes and discs just fitted and FSH by main Hatfield OPC and YES I am thinking of selling it, hence the detail. It has no damage and is just about to be treated to a professional detail as black does show swirl marks and tiny scratches. The dealer offered my low £60's as a trade in though. It has also had all the rads replaced under warranty and any recall/checks all done by the OPC.

Its an amazing car and I am in two minds about selling which is why I took an extended warranty for thinking time plus the logic that its not getting much use at the moment so why sell if I dont need to but I have my eye on the new Gen 2 Turbo S.

As per Gary's comments

Adaptive sports seats really are good, I don't have on my 911 but have tried on a loaned Turbo and loved it.

If you like changing gear, short shift is a peach

Chrono seems a must but to be honest, If I was buying a second hand TT it would not be the end of the world without it (I'd probably re-map it anyway)

Tip I'd skip, sorry guys I know If you are big city commuters its more comfortable.

Ceramics - Nice to have, if the car you want comes with them, its a result. Not that many people specified ceramics on the Gen 11 so you might be narrowing options too much by putting it on a must have list. There are OEM aftermarket options if you feel the need for better brakes that are cheaper (Brembo 380mm 8pot conversion for eg).

Different story with the GEN2 as many more people are specifying Ceramics, there it'd definitely be high on my want list.
 
I had a Turbo Tip for a fair few years and I loved it [&:] against the flow I know.[:(]
but I found the Turbo has so much torque/grunt that it suited the tip - as it does the PDK..
True it took longer to get into than a manual but I did and loved it...
Obviously the numbers of sales of Gen1 Turbo was a lot higher as the tip was quicker to 62mph anyhow [;)]

Chrono adds options to the PCM as well as the wart and overboost..

A big thumbs up for the turbo tip, I had a manual C2S before the turbo and got tired of bouncing off the rev limiter when pushing on. After driving for 6 hours from the port to Stuttgart with a 20 minute break you really appreciate the Tip as a long distance cruiser, and then the following day batting around the black forest mountain hair pins using the steering wheel buttons really made sense especially as the car senses its play time and holds the gears longer, pdk next for me. As Gary says I think you'll find a higher percentage of used Tips please don't discount them until you've tried both. I would also add this year would usually be my Porsche change year but after really getting to know my turbo last November in Germany I have no reason to change. Good hunting if you can get one with ceramics even better as its the only thing I miss on my car after having them on my C2S, they really do have a positive effect on the handling/steering noisier on braking but also added bonus they keep your wheels clean!

I suppose as I am about to spend a fair amount of cash I should drive both Tip and manual but I just love the short shift on my C4S and wasn't overly impressed with the Tip in the 996 and I take it for the 997 not that much change? I think in the latst edition of 911 Mag with the gen 2 turbo test the guy said something about with manual you feel as though you are driving the car and not just piloting it...However I also have to face the fact that most of the driving I do is city and the full auto option would be handy but I am sure I would end up leaving it in auto all the time...
Values second hand seem about the same so dont think it matters too much.
Ceramics dont bother me...steel ones do the job just as well and are much cheaper to replace though I hear design 911 are doing a cheaper aftermarket ceramic disc...
Seems colour does make a difference...black/black holds vals a little better?

Like you I love my short shift. However having driven PDK cars a number of times now, I'd go for the pdk on the turbo if I was buying new. It suits the car so well and brgings out all the improvements made it is a manual twin gearbox after all even if there is an auto option for commuting. I found as a casual driver of TT's not an owner I struggled to tell the difference in the manual Gen1 to Gen2.

In my experience no..

Some colours do make a difference and are slower/harder to move on...
I had a black/black Turbo and come trade in time, I got the 'lots of that colour spec car' from the dealer which made it worth no more than any other..

Buy what you want -NOT what the dealer wants
