997 Turbo - Starter motor replacement

I have a 2009 Manual Turbo which has had intermittent starter motor problems for the last couple of years (Clicks but won't turn) 99% of the time it works perfectly.
This has has now been diagnosed by OPC as "new starter motor needed" and a four figure fix by them (I am looking into a non Porsche warranty claim)

Is the replacement a DIY job?

Hi Jon,
The starter is basically an electric motor with a Bendix gear attached. Therefore, provided you are in a position to remove the item yourself and can spare the car for a few days, I'm pretty sure you should be able to find a local company that can recondition it or supply you with an exchange. It's a fairly straight forward removal and replacement procedure provided you have access to the tools. [] Often simply cleaning up the unit and lubricating the gearing will do the trick.

If my warranty won't cover it, I'll look for a recon/exchange unit

While you're under there, check the Alternator-Starter Motor Earth Strap. It's a known issue on older cars.
