997 Turbo v 996 Turbo S

Pondering a purchase of a Turbo to add to my 9934S

Is the 997 Turbo worth the extra £40,000 over a good 996 Turbo S. Depreciation is a factor but not the only one

Just missed a nice 996 Turbo S cabriolet and now wonder about buying a 997 Turbo Cab

Thoughts welcomed

Having gone from a 996 to a 997 admittedly not the S version, I would still pick the later car.
The 996 are great bargains at the moment if you can indeed get one! prices are firming up quite nicely- as are the 997 Turbos

The old adage of power without control I think is the answer I would give, the 997 is much more planted on the front and the trick 4wd diff really does work.
I find the PASM adds to a great ride to the car, however I have seen some people say they prefer the 996 suspension setup with it being that much firmer, I used to find the 996 crashy rather than firm compared to the 997.[&:] IMHO

The interior on the 997 for me is a nice place to be, making the 996 look a generation older - which it is....
In terms of cabriolet you're looking possibly more towards a GT type car than outright track car, so again the 997 wins for that purpose of use quite easily.
Service costs are less on the newer being every 20K, so a bonus once again

Depreciation is a forgone conclusion that the 996 has already taken a hit but the prices are firming up for both models

IMHO

Would concur with interior as I have a 987 Boxster S + 9934s

The 993 is classic Porsche but the 987 is the same as the 997 and very pleasant - not so the 996

But its £40K more than a 996 Turbo

I'd personally say you could put the £40k difference to better use than the real world differences between the cars - for sure the 997 is a more mature and safer prospect, but there was never a bad word to say of the 996 until it was superceded.

If you can live with the slightly lower interior quality of the 996 then save your money - there won't be a significant difference in servicing between the two, but there will be in depreciation.

or on that basis you could buy a renault sport and save even more money...... [&:] [;)]
