997 wheels

Afternoon all, contemplating a 996 carrera 2 purchase and just doing some research....

Do 997 alloys fit a 996? I'm thinking specifically about the 19" Carrera Sport wheels. Thanks for any advice.

I think you would have problems, especially with the rears;

996 facelift:
Front - 8J, 50mm offset
Rear - 10J, 63mm offset

997 Carrera Sport:
Front - 8.5J, 55mm offset
Rear - 11.5J, 67mm offset

You can do the maths, or there is a handy calculator here: http://www.1010tires.com/wheeloffsetcalculator.asp

Thanks Richard

But I now see that the same wheel in Boxster fitment is 8.5 et50 front and 10 et42 rear, which equates to the fronts sticking out and extra 6mm and the rears an extra 21mm, which sounds like they might just fit!

Watch your overall wheel/tyre diameter too. I went from 996 18s to 997 19s on mine and followed all the proper maths for the offset and spacing.

I was told 997 standard 235/35/19 tyres would be OK on the front, but actually the overall diameter is bigger than the 996 standard. This caused the inside of the tyre to foul the base of the suspension strut at high speed or on sharp cornering due to the extra downforce on the car. The rubbing/vibration this caused removed the fun of driving the car!

I fixed the problem in the end by fitting much bigger spacers than necessary on the front, but a 30 profile tyre would've been an easier answer if I'd known at the outset!

Cheers,

Neil.
