997 Why buy one

Why buy one?
You don't really need a reason, it ought to be obvious. It's a supercar and it's an icon. The best thing is that you don't need to make compromises when it comes to owning or driving.

What else is there?
Ferraris, obviously - but at double the price they are not double the fun, nor even twice as practical. TVRs are the most truly exotic and "out-there" cars, but you need something you can rely on to work properly every day.

In the company car park
You'll get maximum respect and buckets of envy. A 911 means you have arrived and probably have a majority shareholding in the company anyway. Just make sure you park within sight of your office window, so you can keep an eye on it...

In your pocket
Money isn't really an issue at this level, although the company accountant will be pleased with a return of up to 70% on the initial retail price after three years - if you have to liquidate assets.

On the road
The 911 really is an everyday supercar, which is exactly what you need. Absolute dependability, and the ability to rack up motorway miles without tiring you out. Perfect

But Hamster and May didn't agree with him though!

How could they ... Hamster has bought a 997 and May has bought the best sports car in the world The 987 [;)]

Hamster has always been a Porsche owner, he has had the 1979 Porsche 928 for a while; not sure if the 997 would have meant him getting rid of the 928 (I doubt it)

I think, of the 3 Top Gear presenters, Richard is the real car enthusiast, just look at his collection:

Nah - the 986 is that. It doesn't have the fairground interior of the 987. [;)]

I'm sure Hammy also had a 911 at some time.

Yes, it was a left hooker. What about the Dodge Charger he was supposed to have bought?
Anyway, baby Aston put in its place on the performance criteria. Have to admit though it looks terriffic. Beauty is unfortunately only skin deep sometimes.

Just don't forget that Clarkson has bought a £100,000+ Ford that he has had to return to the manufacturers once already.

That probably says more about him than anyhing else.

Geoff

I recall seeing in the Sunday Times Driving section/pages a report to the effect that he had accepted it back although the alarm system was still not working properly.

Now, I know that he hates Porsches, but he could have got a better car for less money...

How long ago did you see that?.

My information was that it went back again after the alarm was "temporarily" disabled....................permanently!

Whilst I think its agreed JC has a dislike for Porsche, its strange that on the cover of his book " born to be riled" he sits in front of one !!
so he probably knows a thing or two about marketing.

To be fair I'd have been more shocked if he had said he loved and picked the 997

What the TG presenters like and what they prattle on about on the scripted pantomime on telly are 2 different things! 3 presenters gushing over the same car wouldn't make good viewing so someone's always being the bad boy to stir up some debate.
