i have a old 996 ( 1999 ) i was looking about the other day at 997's and the prices are falling , which i reckon could make for a good buy, so i think to myself i will check out the 997 forum, oh dear, it looks like a whole world of grief, i'm sorry but just look at the list of problems you blokes have , dissapointing exhaust, sat nav failure, pcm failure, leaking sunroof , etc, etc, now come on, there must be some good points or do i stick with the old girl ?

Like most things in life the 1% of bad is more newsworthy than the 99% of good! On my third 997 and (touch wood!) never had any of those issues.

Type 997 is the most successful 911 ever built. Around 250,000 were produced during its 7 year cycle. By comparison, Ferrari total build of all their models amounts to only around 50,000 units for the same period.

With this number of 911's running around, it is hardly surprising some vehicles will have succumbed to component defect or driver abuse, but it's a small percentage compared to other sports car manufacturers - and, because it is such a rare event, much is made of it when it happens.

From an engineering standpoint, 997 is unsurpassed. I've owned various Porsches for over 30 years and can confidently say 997 is the best of the bunch. But it's a machine with many moving components, so if you're thinking of buying one, be prudent, spend a little extra money getting it checked out and then enjoy it. 996 is a fine motor, but not a patch on 997 IMHO.

Regards,

Clive.

.... , dissapointing exhaust, sat nav failure, pcm failure, leaking sunroof ...

If that's it, then you have just proved it's a pretty impressive motor! Not exactly going to stop you winning the race, or getting to work[:)]

Please don't be put off by some of the posts. I have recently submitted 2 of them (sports exhaust and PCM failure)!

I have only had the car for 3 days and am in the 'familiarisation' period and questioning every aspect of it. I have had limited exposure to Porsches in the past. My previous was a Cayman which I had for 2 years and it never missed a beat.

The sports exhaust is just my perception and I was expecting something like a big bore, straight through megaphone. It's just not that but it really sounds very nice and throaty.

The PCM, hopefully is sorted, probably operator error, and fires up 1st time, everytime now.

The 997 is a fabulous car really and one I personally would wholehartedly recommend, as previous post, just be careful what/where you buy.

Cheers.

Same as everyone else - you're always going to have negatives as a majority of posts when looking online because, as a rule, people will only reach for the keyboard when things go wrong / treated badly etc.
As has already been pointed out, the number of 'My xxx is broke' threads versus physical 997s sold is minscule.
Buy, drive, enjoy. I did - almost 18 months now and wouldn't change her.

Whilst some commnets/requests for information are negatives, many of them are for assistance/advice.
The forum is an excellent example of members freely offering that advice when a poster requests this.

I think there's more than enough threads here showing how good the 997 is and if the majority were of members posting to say how good my sunroof/PCM is, then we'd be accused of back slapping at the least [;)] and a bit sad....

As you can see from my sig, I'm on 911 number 5. In my opinion the 997 is leaps and bounds better than the 996 (must admit, if I could afford to have two Porsches, I'd also like to have my old 993 back!). My current car is the best I've ever owned. Had it nearly a year and half and I still get excited every time I get behind the wheel and turn the key.

I have had 911's since 1984 and with each generation they get better. My 997s have been great and have not had any significant problems with them. The 997 is very significantly better than the 996s and the gen2 is significantly better than the gen 1 997. I have driven the 991 and do not think it is that much better than the 997 and given the cost of changing my 997 with only 12k miles is about £60K I am more than happy to keep and enjoy my 997. The average man in the street would not be able to tell the difference between a 997 and 911 unless parked side by side.

Enjoy a 997.

Yes, I'm also on my 2nd 997 now and can say nothing serious with either of mine.

Have owned this one 3 years and apart from consumables (brakes, tyres, more tyres, radiators, starter motor...), has been 100% bullet proof (apart from the odd coolant leak...did I mention the radiators ??) [;)]

Here's a photo to whet your appetitite :-

Seriously though...I still absolutely love it !!! [:D]

Don't forget there are a lot of us quieter members whose cars are rock solid and problem free. My 7 year old 997 1 with 46k on the clock is still on it's original disks, clutch, RMS, battery.... and has never missed a beat. How many super car owners could say that?
