997S Exhaust

I have just taken delivery of my 997s (its 18 months old with 13k miles) - It has the standard 'S' exhaust system, however, when I start the car, initially and for about 2 minutes, it sounds a little rough (almost like a knocking sound in the tailpipes or off the manifold) - Once the car warms up its fine...Is this normal or should I be taking back to dealer????

Hi Nick,

Welcome and great choice of car.
Sounds like you are experiencing what a lot of new owners experience, myself included, the unusual start up sounds...
From my experience (which is limted) and from what I understand from others they do tend to sound a bit rough on start up, but like you say are fine once they warm up.
I can't say I have ever heard knocking but someone else might have, so I wouldn't worry just yet.
Someone else here will probably be able to re-assure you in more detail.

Enjoy!

Hello Nick, I've had mine (a 997 C2) for a couple of months and I get what sounds like popping sounds in the exhaust system on startup plus a little rough running until warm. Apparently it is all part of the cars character, but makes you worry until someone lets you know!

Ultimately, I would ask your dealer, as it is probably the only way you will be at ease!

Fairly common phenomenom, sounds like a metallic rattle, which gradually disappears as exhaust warms up. Nothing to worry about.

Picked up my year old 997 C2S last Friday and was wondering about that start-up noise so thanks for putting my mind a ease as well [:D]

The popping sound is entirely normal, I remember reading somewhere that it's due, on start-up, to unburned fuel being allowed to pass into the exhaust system where it burns and brings the catalytic converter up to temperature more rapidly, thereby reducing the overall level of 2NOx emission.

Perfectly normal, mine has always done it and has just had its first service and still does it.

Bought my 2yr old/4,500 mile C2S from Paragon about 6 weeks ago and remarked to them about the strange noise, but they said it was normal. Asked another Porsche driver and they confirmed they all do it, so I'm glad to see so many others on the Forum concur.

I would check that the car has had the exhaust tip replacement recall - mine had it done, but it is nearly 3 years old now and I am not sure when the factory latched on and changed the design?

In the old days, the exhaust gave off a real tinny rattle when cold and on plenty of cars the tips fell off - the rattle was split welds I understand?

I had the tips replaced and a month later upgraded to the PSE system (which is what you should do anyway - to stop the car sounding like a Zanussi appliance [8D])!!
