997S gen 1 using a lot of oil

Aquired my 2006 997S back in July, seems to use quite a bit of oil, no leaks apparent, is this normal or a possible symptom of something else. I have probably put in 2-3 litres for 3K of miles.

David,

You don't give your car's mileage, but obviously the higher this is, the more engine wear is to be expected.

Porsche say oil consumption of 1 litre per 600 miles is normal and acceptable for a 911, although in practice many owners experience consumption much less than this.

A lot depends on the type of journey you undertake. Short journeys tend to add fuel and moisture to the lubricant giving the illusion little oil is being burnt, then when you set off on a long journey, the hotter oil evaporates this mixture and makes it seem that consumption is suddenly excessive.

After standing overnight, most horizontally opposed boxer engine burn a little oil on start up, as gravity tends to leak a little into combustion chambers, but if it smokes excessively on start up, this could indicate valve guide/stem wear and then cylinder head refurbishment is required.

Regards,

Clive.

Yes bore scoring comes to mind, also RMS/IMS leaks. My old C2S was using more oil than seemed normal, couldn't find any oil initially on the floor in my garage. I took it to Sports and Classic and he said that the IMS seal needed replacing. He did it and new clutch at the same time. I hope for your sake it's IMS seal and not bore scoring.

If you still have opc warranty I would get it checked ASAP - my xs use was indeed bore scoring and would've cost in xs of £10 k to fix if I hadn't had the warranty

997's done 42K, if 1 litre every 600 miles is normal then this sounds about right. Short Journeys are not typical for me and this car. There is a little smoke on start up but it soon stops.

I have also started to hear a small whirring noice when depressing the clutch, could this be related to the IMS seal?

Check the tail pipes, if the near side pipes are materially darker than the offside ones this a sign of bore scoring which would account for the heavy oil usage. Although Porsche state that one litre per 600 miles is acceptable the reality is that oil use at that level is indicative of a problem.

IMS seal = Intermediate shaft oil seal.

Whiring noise - possibly clutch release bearing.

As others have said David, best to get everything checked out sooner rather than later for your peace of mind.
