These are the first crystal-clear shots of the next-generation Porsche 911 "" internally called the 998 "" that will replace the current model in 2011.

Few days ago we reported that this here (same car, but from a farther distance in heavy rain) was the new 911 Turbo, but on these pictures you can see that the side air-intakes in front of the rear wheels are fakes "" and so is the huge rear wing which hides the shape of the smaller spoiler of the standard 911s.

Compared to the current model, the front lights are standing more upright and the side mirrors have moved from the side window corner to the side of the door(Porsche is using the same mirrors on the prototype as it had years ago on the production versions of 968 and 993) Don't get confused by the rear lights as these are just temporary. The next-generation 911 will feature the same flat-six engine that surely gets a power boost and the new PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

Insiders suggest that is a Panamera GT coupe in disguise, and not the 998 - the tyre widths are too similar front and rear for a 911, and if you study the tyre wall height against those 19" rims, they are far too big for a 911.

Nice Turbo intake graphics stuck on the car.. looks like someone has a sense of humour... [&:]

Oh God - better start saving again - I am bound to want one!!

Can't keep out of the gen 2 - done 6000 miles already.

Change at 5 years / 100 000 miles for a gen 2 turbo! Should be 550hp and sub 3 sec 0-60 by then!

Daro911, keep up fella those have been out for weeks !

although how hard would it be to slap duct tape all over a 911, drive it around the Nurburgring car park and wait to get photographed [8D]

I am hoping for a big step forward in the 998 from the 997 - perhaps a challenge to F430 e.g. mid engine in place of vestigial rear seats, longer wheelbase.
Gen 2 PDK box is excellent but needs a sports setting like Audi S4 DSG, paddle shifts that turn with the wheel are tricky for road driving.
Porsche have some serious competition e.g. the new GTR?
