A 40 year dream that started in Jersey

Hi PCGB,

I just thought I’d share this Porsche story that started back in the 1980’s.
As a young , car mad child, I would be able to name all the cars on the road, calling out the make and model as my father drove us around to various places.
We would often drive across to Jersey on the ferry for our holidays where there would be the odd car that I would rarely see around the local streets Of Wiltshire where I grew up.
On one of the many day trips out on the small English isles, my father pulled up into a car park, in his beige Morris Marina that we had at the time, we all jumped out in excitement about going to a theme part, ice cream van or or beach. I can’t recall what we were going to see that day. But I do remember one thing that stuck in my mind, and stayed with me until this day.
It sparked a dream. Something inside me was ignited. I couldn’t explain the feeling but all I knew was one day, if I dreamed hard and long enough. One day I would own one.
As I jumped, full of excitement, out of the beige brick on wheels I was stopped dead in my tracks.
It was like looking at a spaceship from some far away planet. A Burgundy rounded, voluptuous, beautiful Porsche.
Being a car mad kid I knew exactly what it was. I even had matchbox toy of one. But never had I seen one in my young flesh, not even in all the drives out in the Morris.
“Mum…. It’s a a Porsche” I shouted. And we were parked right next to it.
I couldn’t believe it. There was only one thing to do. Take a picture.
I stood next to this space ship and instructed my mum to take a picture of me. Me standing next to a Porsche!
Whatever we were doing that day I still can’t remember. My head was in a spin for the rest of the day, and beyond.
That day always stayed with me. Until finally, 40 years later, when the stars aligned. I found myself scrolling the usual places looking for a new car. There was only one brand that would fill a young boys dream.
It took a while to find the right one but in the end I found it. A car to make that 10 year old me proud. So I contacted the dealer and the purchase was made.
The wife thinks I’ve been looking for a Porsche for the past 6 months. But it’s actually been 40 years.
A dream come true.
The car I saw in Jersey I think was a 2.7 early 911. The car I purchased was 2010 997.
40 years between them but they will still make car mad kids look and wonder. Look and dream… “Maybe one day I’ll make my dream come true to”.

Thanks for sharing, Andy! Great story and very relatable. My dream was also sparked at a very early age - also spotting (and being able to name) every car on the road. One thing that was (and in many ways still is) a constant is Porsche. It was always about Porsche. Fulfilling that dream was and still is magnificent! Enjoy your 911!
