A bit of advice please

I now have my 1980 SC back in NZ (brought her back from the UK with me) and ready to get it on the road. The car sat for several months from March until it arrived in NZ, I drove it back to my place from the shipping co. - a bit naughty as I was still on UK plates and even managed to overtake a cop [:)]

I went to start it the other day and battery was flat, I've charged it up and it now turns over fine but the red light (G) stays on and some strange whirring sound. The red light stays on even when I've turned the car off completely - any ideas?

Having never been mech minded myself I am due to take it to a respected specialist here to have a service and get road legal etc but I can't start the car which is frustrating!

Cheers

Have been waiting to see if you get a reply to this from someone with the right answer because I experience something similar some time ago.

Does the whirring noise emanate from the front of the car behind the fuel tank?

My SC's problem was due to the fuel pump continuing to work after the ignition was turned off. It was an intermittent infrequent problem where the pump would whirr for varying amounts of time after switch off and occurred maybe half a dozen times in 3 months and flattened the battery on one occasion. It resolved eventually without a diagnosis never to reoccur. I had assumed that the fuelpump relay (the red one) had stuck on, but changing it made no difference. I examined a 911SC circuit diagram at length but never came to a satisfactory conclusion which explained the occurrence.
I seem to remember the ignition light glowing (at less than full brightness) at the time too.

Best of luck with this and please let me know how you get on.

Hi DIJ

Yes the noise does appear to come from behind the fuel tank. It only does it when winding over though, not after I've turned it off.
