A bit of advice

As the Boxster and 996 are similar, the same "horror stories" apply to both engines. There are a small proportion with cracked cylinder heads, d chunk bore cracks, IMS problems. The majority are fine but some do give trouble, just like any other car. Porsche M96 engines got bad press due to bad PR from Porsche - they refused to acknowledge that the engines do occasionally cause trouble and give a goodwill payment for a replacement engine. The usual RMS leaks apply and they are usually minor. Worn suspension bushes apply to both. Up till the B pillar both models are nearly identical underneath.
Look at the Hartech website for more information about the potential engine problems and solutions. I have a 3.4 and I love it to bits. Only bit of advice is to get a PSE or Oettle rear box and you'll be laughing everytime you give it welly.
