A/C bits

Well I went to get my A/C system charged today and the chap carried out a positive pressure test of the system and reckoned that my condenser has sprung a leak. The OPC wanted £391 for one, Porsche-a-part can get new ones for £275 but I wondered if anyone had one lying around in their garage? Aparently they are no good if they've been off the car for much more than about 6 months as the aluminium tubing starts to corrode and fur up after then, but if anyone has carried out an A/C delete on their car recenlty I might be interested in buying your condeser!

Am going to get a 2nd opinion anyway.

Cheers.

I'm looking to put A/C back into my S2 . The previous owner removed it .
I was wondering does it have to be 944 parts ? why can't another manufacturers parts be used ?

It does seem strange to have specific A/C parts made for every car with A/C. I have read somewhere that the compressor is the same as the unit used on the Ford Granada Scorpio's but i've not got any confirmation of that.

Been there, done that [:(], & I'd suggest you sell your S2 & buy a car (turbo maybe?) with working a/c - it's going to work out cheaper [;)]

Having said that, if the pipework is still in the engine bay, it's not that bad.a job, but there's no guarantee the pipes will be leak-proof.

Interesting....

I wonder what the prices are like? With new hoses I think mine would work a treat!

If they can supply flexible hoses to replace the hard pipes then they should be much easier to fit, otherwise half the engine bay has to come out!

I'm picking up a new condensor today and aiming to fit it this weekend, as per previous post.

It is costing me £175 plus vat from Jonny Holland at Unit 11 - he has a great source for parts at reasonable prices.

Then just need to get it recharged and hopefully ([8|]), it will work...

That's a good price. Is it a new one? The cheapest new one i've found so far was £275 but it was for an OEM part.

I'm getting a second opinion on mine as the chap who diagnosed my condenser said he could hear a hissing coming from behind the condenser so didn't actually eyeball a crack or something. However i've been told one of the A/C lines also runs behind the condenser so it could also be from that line. Unlikely but worth a check.

Looks like it is an easy job to replace the condenser - you'll have to let me know how you get on Nick.

Got to get the blasted thing running yet Scott !and MOT'd and taxed groan before I can think about A/Con .
used to love having it in the Mondeo hire cars from Hertz. Don't know how they could do it. Delivered to my door and collected and I never had one with more than 300 miles on the clock !

Yes, it is a brand new one. I didn't escape from work in time to pick it up, so have yet to see it. Will be removing the old one later today, so will let you know how I get on.

Thought he might have put some dye in the system so he could tell for sure where the leak was coming from.

That is how they normally confirm leaks however it requires you to charge the system and since he could hear the system hissing during the pressure test I didn't want to waste £50. He was convinced the leak was from the condenser but didn't realise there was an A/C pipe that runs behind the condenser.

Picked up my new condensor this morning to hopefully fit it tonight.

Just looks like a slim radiator, albeit with different fittings obviously!

I'm going to have to drill out some of the undertray screws, as they were siezed solid when I tried unscrewing them last night[8|]
