A/C compressor Failure

My A/C compressor just went up in smoke. It seems to have spat a load of melted rubber over the inside of the engine bay, I presume it had a rubber clutch. The car runs fine still with the A/C compressor disengaged but the remains of the clutch in the centre is flapping about. Can I remove the center of the clutch, there is a bolt in the middle, and leave the outer part for the belt to run round?

I imagine that it is possible. The AC compressor works on a magnetic clutch that energises when yopu press the switch. Provided you have enough gas that is. Like a centifugal clutch but with electrickery doing the work [:D]

Ive got the clutch off now. It unbolts on the front, the rubber is connecting the inner an outer clutch. I think its acting as a torsional damper. Anyway the inner got dettached from the outer and it span up and created a load of smoke :D.

I will probably remove the AC compressor on the turbo I have and put on a normal alternator bracket from an S2. Its there if you want it. Clutch on it still works when the button is pressed,

Just note though that to remove the old one you will have to degas the system. Until you regas it the clutch won't work. There is a low pressure switch in the system to prevent it from doing so. The fans should still come on though. Good indication that all should be well.

Anyone know of a guide to re-build the air conditioning units? Also looking for information on removing the system. I guess removing all of it will be fun!
