Posted this in members wanted also. I quite fancy re-commissioning my A/C and it seems my current condenser is porous to say the least!

In the off chance somebody may be sitting with either or both of these new or in good working order please give me a shout.

It's for an oval dash. Condenser is part no. 94457301105 and I believe is a Hella 8FC351038381.

Receiver/dryer is part no 94457394300.

I can get brand new in the states for £130 for OEM condenser and an equivalent receiver/dryer for £10! Needless to say in the UK it seems to be not quite as cheap! £267 for condenser and £75 for receiver/dryer is the best I can find! [&:]

Hopefully someone here comes up trumps before I need to contact long lost family in the US!

Cheers

Stuart

I have a new receiver/dryer on my shelf for exactly this mate. I think I got it from ECP for around £30. This may have gone up though by now.. Worth a look.

Thanks Rob. ECP not even listing one now on their web site but a quick look about google suggests I can get an equivalent for around £20 delivered. The condenser remains the biggest issue...................[:D]

Yep... I have faced this problem... I have two second-hand condensers, neither of which are any good... I have enquired about getting them recored - I didn't get anywhere with that - it seems that the cost of trying it worked out so close to getting a cheap new one that it wasn't worth pursuing. When I next get round to following it up I will look at importing one from the US where they seem to be much more reasonably priced.
The only thing I haven't done yet, which I mean to, is have a look at connecting up a compressed air supply to the condensers I have and seeing if I can "muggyweld" them up where they are leaking, without blocking them.

I must admit was also to ask Pete what he was going to do with the condenser from his '44 if it is going on a diet! (Assuming his aircon is working)

For what it is worth, my other turbo has had the aircon working for best part of ten years after it was recommissioned, and work very well it does too!

Had all those thoughts too Tref. Certainly wouldn't mind spending £130 on a condenser and having a punt along with a new dryer and a re-gas. It's the only thing on my car which doesn't work and has never been addressed.

Incidentally how hard is it to remove the condenser, I assume it sits in front of the radiator?

Go with Rob's new receiver/dryer - this is the only part Porsche requires you to change when converting to new refrigerant. Supposedly it should be changed any time air has gotten into the system or any other contamination has occurred. Actually - this is probably the only reasonably priced part of the system - for new compressors, etc. definitely go the internet - NEW denso compressors can be had for about a third of what OPC wants for them. Most places here recommend against rebuilt compressors although I would think a proper factory rebuild would be OK if the price was right. Also note the 90% of the time - the only thing wrong with the compressor is the nose seal has dried out. Qualified AC folk can fix this pretty cheaply but of course the compressor must come off so the labor ends up more than a compressor replacement.

If you are removing the compressor be careful re-installing. You can over tighten the rear mount and stress the center joints in the compressor body with will then leak (don't ask me how I know - just believe). I resealed my compressor and replaced the nose seal - incorrectly. On my compressor - the o-rings where the Porsche hose adapter mounts to the compressor had failed - the o-rings in the body of the compressor were fine but I changed them anyway - torque to 18-20 lbs.

Good luck....

Thanks for all the help and info. Can't help thinking I'm delving into a can of worms but I'll give it a bash!

Ken - Did you get my PM's?

Cheers

Mine has been converted but no longer working, looks like a leak from the front of the compressor, need to sort it out as black on black with no sunroof can get a bit sweaty in the heat we have been having lately.
Another on the "to do" list !

10 years ago Coolit rebuilt my compressor, replaced the dryer, and changed to R134a or whatever it is/was, and it lasted about 6 years without further attention (and I am sure then it was only down to the fact I wasn't using it regularly). I do recall them saying that the shafts on the compressors could wear, and that made them not worth resealing... Condenser I found easy enough to remove and refit, removed Batwing, and I think there are only two fixings, the challenge is disconnecting the hoses without twisting the hardpipes on the condenser itself.
