A/C resistor 1996 993 C2

Hi All,
Thought you may be interested in my experience trying to renew the above.Following the test as shown in the Technical Section I established that the resistor was more than likely u/s.So, having removed n/s wheel and front liner I had a go at removing said item..........
What a job.Anyway the long and short of it is that I have failed, owing to the fact that whilst I managed to undo the 4mm bolt virtually all the way using a modified ratchet as suggested by Maurice it just would not turn the last couple of threads or so.Try as I might I cannot get it to undo any further.I thought I would have to reort to taking the PU off but the screws on the underside will not budge,so I think I am going to have to leave it to the professionals.

Latest update.................I have managed to get the PU off after a lot of cursing as the fixings on the underside had seized on.Have now ordered all new screws/bolts/fixings and the foam rubber parts.Have yet to undo the resistor bolt which was the cause of the stripdown in the first place as I ran out of time.Though I have managed to drop the aircon rad a little so as to gain better access.
Also took the opportunity to order the dampers/springs which the OPC are doing for £395.

Simple suggestion, but why mess about with the bolt? It's easier to re-site the resistor and you can get it into a much cleaner area above the wheelarch liners where it'll probably have a much happier life. The lead on the resistor is plenty long enough to allow this.

Just a suggestion from experience!!!

I changed this resistor and finally had to take off the whole PU but had no problem in undoing the bolt holding the resistor. Next time I think I could manage without taking off the PU.

Oliver, re your comment about resiting the resitor, surely this it not so easy since I think the resistor has to make contact with the radiator in order for it to work as intended. I imagine it has some type of bi-metal strip inside which will cut the resistorin and out of circuit.

Just a thought

As far as I'm aware, the only influence on the resistor is the current in the two wires attached to it. I don't believe the resistor acts as a thermistor or alike. I'd evidence this by saying the oil cooler ballast resistor isn't actually mounted to the cooler itself, but rather is on a bracket adjacent to the cooler mounting bracket; i.e. merely mounted to something rather than mounted to something that controls it.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Well, I managed to get the bolt holding the old resistor off fairly easily once I had accessed the a/c rad and have now fitted the new resistor.Haven't had time to test it yet though.
Could someone please tell me how you remove the sidelight/fog light lenses from the PU?Obviously,at the moment I can get to the bulbs because the PU is off and I have removed the bulb holders from the back,but try as I might I cannot see how you would change the bulbs when the PU is fitted.Surely you don,t have to drop the PU to change the bulbs ?Whilst I can get the indicator lenses off easily enough I just do not see how you remove the other lenses...

There's a screw to the outside of the foglamp that is hidden when the indicator is in place. Unscrew it, push the entire unit as far sideways to the centre of the PU as you can and then pull. The foglamp will come clear after it has bound a bit on the area you removed the screw from.

I did see a type of screw in the area you mention,it needed a 3mm hex or similar.But on trying it, it just seemed to turn and nothing happened.Will have another look.

That screw is the fog light adjuster,

The fog lights are a very tight fit and the side towards the middle part slots in to the bumper.

Thank you for pointing me towards that site.Now I see where that screw is..........
I want to replace the pieces of foam, which are stuck to the inside of the front bumper above and below the indicator/fog light housings.Anyone have any idea as to the part numbers as my OPC does not know them? They have supplied me with two pieces of foam part nos 993 575 738 00 and 993 575 740 000 respectively but cannot tell me where they are fitted.They both have BLOWER written on the stickers.

good work Michael, I also done it and it is indeed a pig of a job for something so small ! and I really cursed the fact I have the brake colling duct kit when made it even tricky to put back together [&:]
