A couple of engine out questions...

evening all... couple of questions I hope you can help with... I'm currently midway through dropping the engine out of my turbo, it's an interesting and quite frankly terrifying experience....lots and lots of wires and mystery piping etc...lots of fun though.

so.. is it best to drain the oil and remove the oil filter first?

I have a complete coolant pipe replacement kit, is there somewhere i can get a complete oil pipe replacement kit too?

when you take the inlet manifold off ( I know this isn't necessary for engine removal but did anyway as I will be stripping engine) there is a big cluster of wires and pipes underneath joining a central point...what is this!?!?

Its certainly easier to take the manifold off! Drain the oil, you can leave the filter on. The wiring under the manifold goes to the oil sensor below the filter & the oil level sensor in the sump (maybe another too?), you need to take these wires off, they will stay in the engine bay with the engine out. Also remove the distributor cap, it'll give you a couple of extra inches when dropping the lump.

Morning - with reference to this, I believe you can get replacement oil pipe kits, however my recommendation would be to take the existing oil pipes (flexible hoses that connect the thermostat/ filter housing to the cooler) to a hydraulic hose specialist who will use the existing unions/fittings to make your new shiny braided steel hoses !

This is what I did when I rebuilt my turbo engine - top trick one of the oil pipes (IIRC the lower one) has a 'strap' which locates into the filter housing with 10mm nut - this is a complete bugger to remove and fit with the engine in the car [ it can be done but....]. IMHO remove and replace this with the engine out.

Whilst you've got the engine out/oil cooler system apart - have the oil cooler flushing internally and back blown with an air jet to clear out all the old flies n bugs.

With regard to wiring and looms the good news is that the Porsche engine looms and connectors are pretty much idiot proof - unless your force the connectors on they're all polarised and will only fit where they're supposed to.

I dare say you can remove the engine with the inlet manifold on (hmmm) but with the turbo it's so much easier, not just access to all the wiring loom particularly at the back of the engine around the dipstick and oil/water separator unit but also removing the down pipe and exhaust cross over pipe from the turbo.

Anyhow, good luck with your project ! I'm by no means an expert but have been tinkering with my Turbo (ooo er Missus) fo many years and removed and replaced the engine recently - if I can be of any help PM or ring me (07540 193874) for advice ?

Gavin, you have an interesting collection of strife's.....
sounds like you are enthusiastic on the DIY maintenance front, same here. I have found Promax in M.Keynes are useful in terms of supplying the bits at sensible cost, and also helpful with tips and advise. Plus of course Clark's Garage. And the Porsche parts / maintenance PET for a fiver on ebay.

Ive just dropped the engine in my turbo. Lots of stuff to D/C isn't there, the thing in the middle of the wires and pipes is probably the cycling valve (boost control). I'm going to remove all that gubbins and simplify the installation on my rebuild. I drained the oil first to get rid of some weight.

I've got pretty much everything off now, just the aircon compressor to drop tomorrow and see if the WD40 I sprayed on the exhaust bolts yesterday has worked!

I'm waiting for the loan of a engine hoist to support so I can drop the bottom, and will hopefully be sliding it out underneath next week.

one more thing....I can't for the life of me spot the coolant drain plug on the engine? I've drained and removed the radiator etc but I'm buggered if i can see that and imagine there's probably a fair old bit of water knocking around in there somewhere....
 
a ha! that's why I can't find it! bloody haynes manual......

i want the engine out to give it a good going over, probably a strip down and rebuild, new seals, gaskets, belts etc everywhere, check bores and pistons and basically make it like new...while its out I'm going to clean up the engine bay and give the body a once over as well, possibly a new coat of paint, not sure yet...definitely new carpets, brake caliper rebuild all round and am toying with the Lindsey racing upgrade kit fro when it goes back together, with the chips, bigger turbo, exhaust etc...

have bitten off way more than I can chew but have all the time in the world and a great bit of workshop space so....what the hell [8D]
 
If you're doing that much I'd suggest you use the Haynes manual as it was intended (some kind of funky ornament) and download the pukka workshop manuals.
 
Sounds like you have the same plans as me! I think I am going to stick with the K26/6 turbo, mines being rebuilt atm, get a new decent wastegate and hopefully run a bar to the redline with a nice early spoolup. Might get the local intercooler man to look at the intake system for me as well.

I can't work out if I have the k26/6 or the k26/8 on mine...i know from the age of the ca it should be the 26/6 but am not sure...will post a pic of it when its off the motor.

K26/6 I expect, it should say on the label on the turbo. Should be able to see it when you take the intake manifold off.
