A couple of questions please

Having been the proud and very happy owner for almost 2 weeks now, I just have a few questions to see if anybody else has experienced these things.

1st The accelerator pedal does not seem completely smooth it seems ever so slightly sticky

2nd My Speedo seems to be well over reading by at least 5mph even at 40mph and over (but only checked against GPS)

is either of these normal?

Speedos do seem to over-read by about 5-10% against GPS, which is probably a useful 'safety' margin.

The 964 accelerator has many linkages,

Maybe, but the 996 is drive-by-wire (not sure about the early 996 C2's pre-face lift).
The pedal operates a cable I think, which is joined to a potentiometer (variable resistor) behind the dash somewhere. The reading is then sent to the eletronic throttle which is controlled by a motor that operates through 1 or 2 reduction gears.

Operation should be smooth, but dirt, stones, etc can get in there. With the engine off, you could try pressing it all the way down a few times, and see if that clears it.

Just as a matter of interest the e-gas was standard on the C4 from launch (99MY) & on the C2 from 2000MY.

The 996's progress can be "jerky" on light throttle openings, but the actual pedal itself shouldn't feel "sticky"!

it's 996 C4 built 1/99 with 28,000.

It does almost feel like the accelerator cable needs greasing or similar as it is only ever so slightly sticky/notchy but this obviously does transpire to the wheels.

It does not feel silky smooth which is what I would have expected, it is going back into the main dealers at the end of this month for a few small things that didn't get done in time for my collection, I'll get them to take a look.

Many thanks for the reply's though

Depends on whether the pedal movement itself is sticky (as could be tested it by pushing by hand - since your hands are more sensitive), or whether it subjectively feels sticky by observing the behaviour of the car.

Just tried pushing the pedal by hand with the engine off i.e. no power and it does feel slightly stick if you move the pedal slowly enough like if you were changing speed following the car in front, if you move the pedal slightly faster i.e. if you were accelerating then it feels smooth.

It is absolutely normal therefore for a speedo to read about 5% high. It is difficult for the manufacturers to build speedos which are 5% high at all speeds, particularly given the speed range required on a Porsche, so they tend to build in a constant error as well as a speed related error.

Funny how the Stack dials in my old £10k Elise (97R) were spot on with the GPS when my £44k 996 (01X) can't be put together accurately. Mind you the 996 doesn't leak....

I have 2 friends who have Elise's of different years and they are spot on, with the analogue dial the digital read out and GPS.

Now I know most cars tend to be 5% out now days, but 5Mph at 40 is quite a bit in my eyes.

Isnt the wear on the tyres significant? The rolling diameter must make quite a difference.

Btw my two are only 2-3 mph different from the GPS at 40 mph, the Boxster is the closer.

I have a L200 V6 Pick up truck which is spot on, however the roof does not come off and it corners like a blamange [:D]

Plus 6 points on my licence and 3 points which my wife has taken (stupid law), so when I get in the pig I do love that 5mph difference !!!

However who cares I just love the car and also the wife, if she is not nagging [:D]

Just as an update got my car back from the dealer on Saturday, they replaced the throttle pedal assembly?? now it feels silky smooth, this was all done under warranty too [:)]

Don't think this is an unusual problem with early build cars - had exactly the same on my Sept '98 C4 but never bothered to ge it fixed. Just made small precise throttle movements around town slightly difficult to do smoothly.

On current car ('02 C2) the assembly is silky smooth. Pleased you got yours fixed
